Congratulations but could have done without the false “woe is me my kid is a white male” attitude. Northwestern class of 2022 was 56% white. Your kid is in the single most advantaged race/gender class in this country, even for college admissions.
Oh, can it, PP. It can be harder to get in as a white male these days. Just give the poster a break and can the lecture.

Fair point, and not what I meant to imply so broadly. I should have added the clauses "in regular decision" and "from Montgomery County", as we had been told by everyone, including the guidance counselor, that since the ED class at Northwestern is overwhelmingly white and upper income, that RD is when school seeks to balance the class by emphasizing socioeconomic, geographic and racial diversity.

Why are all these schools so close?
because people in VA think there is VA and then the world. narrow
Most people go to school relatively close to home.
The ones that still have the umbilical cord attached. There is a whole big world out there. Perfect age to enjoy it.
Nothing cracks me up more than UMCP freshman who are 20min from home and spending 13K to live in a moldy leaky can of a dorm.
What is your issue? Why do you care where they go to school? Perhaps they have a financial or medical reason. Maybe they just like it. Maybe they realize these are great schools with incredible academic opportunities. You are contributing nothing to the topic at hand. You really have nothing better to do at 6:30 am than to tell strangers how you laugh at bunch of college students because you think their living conditions are beneath you?
...Not to mention that for many families, these excellent local schools are very affordable! This way, kids can go to college and still have money left for grad school! Why would anyone trash that option?
There is an entire generation of Americans that are saddled with major college debts that they cannot repay. This is a major consideration for MANY families.

my son was wait listed Cornell but admitted MIT
We had an admit Cornell and denied UMCP in our school.
My DS got the full Banneke scholarship this year and he got invited to go to meetings several times at UMCP. At every meting all
admission official kept saying that this year was the most competitive ever by far.

High Reach Schools: UMD, Clemson, UConn, Tulane, and Miami - denied at all.
Slight Reach Schools (At least in our view of things): VT, Pitt, Delaware, Miami Ohio, Indiana, Elon - accepted at all. Elon was after EA deferral.
Safeties: Towson, Alabama, South Carolina, Auburn.

Another congrats for your DC. Those were my stats exactly some 25 years ago, but only a 1280 SAT. I applied to two OOS schools, got into one and have done fairly well in life. So nice he has those choices!
