+1

Fashion is absolutely about self expression. The runways don't exactly have the most boring clothes. I don't expect this crowd to understand the real meaning of fashion. Maybe that is OP's point. Sheeple seeking to appear like you belong on the most liked instagram post is not fashion, that is unoriginal and boring. Can't wait until the fad dies.

Fashion has nothing to do with labels. When I was a young Hill staffer and lobbyist in the early 1990s, women cared more. They just did. That had nothing to do with labels. Everyone just took a lot more time to look professional and well put together. In general, people just don't put that kind of time in looking nice. Clothes that fit nicely, shoes that are taken care of, maybe a trendy piece or 2.

Just googled le pliage I had this bag 20 plus years ago in high school. Wow.

It’s very light weight and yes, leather. I can’t imagine anyone ever describing it as heavy.

I will admit to being basic because I don’t care about fashion and do not have a huge budget for clothes (hello, mortgage, 529, student loans, etc.). That said, I always do my hair and makeup and think women who don’t look juvenile. What I do not do is buy all the brands that so many of these people do. I purposely avoid Le Pliage (I get almost a visceral reaction when I see them), Hunter, Tory Burch, Lululemon, etc. There are so many ways to dress without showing off a brand and I really scratch my head at all the conformity.

Then I realized I was carrying the ultimate lemming bag, from HS kids to serious urban proffesionals. Fine, it's plain, lightweight, functional. But so are many others.

Reminds me of my time in Paris during undergrad! It fits my work files and a sweater! I got used to the no interior pockets and how lightweight it is, so I just keep replacing my bag so that it looks nice. I am not carrying it to be stylish.

Please tell me which other one is as light weight and as high quality! I'm dying to get rid of my hobo Le Pliage but every time I pick up another one, it's heavier and/or uglier.

YSL tote

So you're suggesting everyone in DC walk around with a 1k ysl tote. That tote is HUGE. I am petite and it would overwhelm my frame. Let pilage are affordable and comes in lots of sizes. It's a good bag for the masses.

I’d rather spend time and money on my career and my kid. I do Stitch Fix 4 times a year, so I let them dress me for work. I work at a federal agency where literally all my female colleagues wear either no makeup or very little. Wearing a ton of makeup and dressing to the nines at work gives the appearance that you aren’t very serious. Not fair, but it’s true IMO.

Because fashionable = vapid? That's a cop out and we are talking about DC area women not LA or Miami.

This only proves the point made before that DC women think dressing poorly makes them superior.
