Sounds great OP! Just wanted to share a story: recently met a new friend/acquaintance of my MILs, a very nice elderly woman. She told us she had 7 children! She was obviously very proud of them, shared about her kids and grandkids, and we met a few that were there at the same event. There was obviously a lot of affection in that family. Someone made a comment about how hard physically it must have been to have seven, and she shared "well I only gave birth to one of them. I married a widower with 6 kids!" Wow! She went your route, but with even more kids. She was very happy, so it all worked out well in her situation.

OP here - they have been very sweet with me but it did take extra time for the oldest to get there but that is no surprise. I really let them get comfortable with me rather than trying to force affection. On our first vacation together I shared an adjoining room with the two older children but we shared a room on the second vacation and it was fine. There were no funny looks or questions and and we kept the door open. I do not spend the night at their home.

Agree, I’m sure there are emotional issues but time helps. OP seems to be taking this very carefully and not rushing into it. Regardless, it’s a big task going from being single to being married with three stepchildren.
