Why?

We love it. Pretty beaches, great snorkeling/diving, and safe. You could totally wander around the island at any hour and not worry about your safety.

Our friends hated it. But they prefer AIs in DR and Mexico where you just hunker down in the beautiful resort.

South seas for me also! Our room was terribly small and very depressing/ sparse. The beach sand was sharp shells.


Plus: sharks.

My sister worked and lived on Captiva, and she wouldn't go in the water there. She drove to other beaches. I told her she was crazy, then she pointed out sharks all over the place. I didn't go in the water when I was at south seas.

This will probably result in me being flamed, but I really didn't like Israel (and I am Jewish). I went as part of a birthright-style trip so it could have been that giant group tours just aren't my thing. But I found the people to be rude and the food to not be very good. Normally food is a highlight of a trip but after a week I didn't even want to hear the word falafel. Parts of it were interesting (like the holocaust museum) and I remember thinking the Golan Heights were beautiful. But overall it is the only country I left thinking "I never want to go back here."

Of course now my kids really want to go so we may take them someday, but I really have zero desire to go.

Cape Cod (so crowded/frumpy)
Delaware Beaches (Rehoboth/Bethany) (Crowded/beaches not very pretty but boardwalk IS fun for a day or overnight trip with kids)
Wintergreen (VA) (the absolute worst - crowded, unappealing in every way)
Nashville (dumpy)
Florence (crowded, touristy - one day was enough and better to stay in another town and take the train in (we stayed in Bologna)
St. Michaels (kinda pretty but don't really get it - boring unless you have a boat)

Only been to LA once several years ago but I loved it. Also loved SF. Never been to Hawaii although I would like to check it out.

I'm from San Diego, and I kind of get this. It really depends on what you're looking for in a vacation. During the summer, the weather is usually nice, the beaches are great, it's a really family-friendly city (zoo, beaches, Old Town, Mission & Pacific Beaches, Balboa Park, La Jolla, LegoLand), and it has lots of good food options. If that's what you're looking for, it can be a good experience. Other times of the year, the water is cold, it can be gray (the infamous "June gloom", which is prevalent much of the year - I even experienced it in August last year), and the slow, informal CA pace isn't for everyone. It's not a place to go to if you like strolling urban historic sites (though if you want culture, the museums in Balboa Park should be on your list). But if you're looking for a summer spot with kids, and just want to relax, it can be great.


This is why LA/San Diego, So Calif in general, is not a good vacation destination. It's not geared toward tourists, it's never what people anticipate, and it's always colder than what people hope for. Fantastic places to live, but go elsewhere for vacation.
