Manafort and Trump have known each other and worked together for over 3 decades.

They both laundered money. This indictment also illustrates to Trump that Mueller knows how to engage in financial forensics and use it in a legal proceeding.

Manafort and Gates arrest and eventual conviction will be the outer edges of an ever-tightening noose closing in on Trump and his family (specifically his sons).

This is how it is always done. The FBI and the Criminal Tax Division of the Justice Department are like the Texas Rangers of old. It's a stupid cliché but they really do always "get their man (or woman!)".
