St Stephens also lost a ton due to graduation But more importantly loss one of the best coaches in the area in Andy Tabil. I suspect the Saints, EHS and STA will all battle it out for the last 3 spots. I think Saint Stephens could very well finish in last place in the IAC this spring which tells you just how deep this league is.


I think this is good analysis. Agree that St. Albans is a dark horse. St. Albans gained a FOGO -- last year they had a middy taking face-offs, not really a true FOGO, and then that player got hurt, so there's nowhere to go but up in terms of STA's ability to get possession on face-offs more this year. I assume the incoming FOGO is quite good -- he has committed to an Ivy -- but I haven't seen him play and as he was playing in the MAC last year he'll find the other IAC teams are stronger competition on the face-offs. The returning STA starting goalie is REALLY good -- he generally platooned last year bc the former coach was loyal to the graduated senior tender -- so having him play the full games will help. I know less about the STA attack other than that some young players got very good experience last year in part due to upperclassmen with injuries. Agree with the poster who says that depth is an issue -- injuries really took a toll last year so STA needs to stay healthy because they have a narrower margin.

I think Bullis will come in at #2, on the strength of an experienced, excellent coaching staff with some high-talent players to work with -- this presumes they can "coach up" some younger players to step in for departed stars. Bullis has at least one highly touted transfer sophomore class player coming in from St. Joseph's in MD to bolster the already-known players.

I think Prep will rebound and on the strength of a lot of depth, take the #3 spot.

I think SSSAS probably comes in at #4, STA #5, Episcopal #6, but wouldn't bet the house on that particular order of things.

Bullis brought in a senior football transfer this Fall, who happened to be their best player. The kid came in from a Baltimore private school, prior to coming Bullis he had over 20 D1 offers.

Bullis brought in a a 2nd semester senior transfer lacrosse player last spring from a MOCO public school.

And you wonder why the school continues to get SHIT on.

No school in the IAC acts like this.

At those schools, it's an admissions policy, not an athletic dept. policy. That's a lot of why they get the scrutiny, I think. I haven't heard of them bringing in senior transfers for lacrosse, though (although I guess if they wanted to they would be supported by the school). I remember people thought a senior transfer from Blake left after football season to go back to his home HS but I don't think that was the case. Re: whether Bullis accepts students who were disciplined at other places I believe it has happened -- can think of a specific example in football -- but personally I don't have a problem with giving kids second chances.

This is getting further afield from lacrosse but a prior poster wanted a school with good lacrosse and good academics, and the debate started over the assertion that Bullis, while a school that many families like, is regarded as #6 in academic prestige in the 6-team IAC. The "we'll take them for just a year" transfer policy is part of why that perception of Bullis exists. By way of analogy, college sports programs that rely heavily on junior college transfers are generally not seen as the strongest academic/athletic destinations. Admissions policies matter when it comes to academic prestige -- it is why the Ivy League has the Academic Index. They are well aware that without some limits, admission for sports could water down the perception of the Ivies as elite academic institutions.





Arguing who is #6 academically in the IAC is like asking which of the Ivy League schools is the worst one. They're all great schools that bring different things to the table. Bullis might be #6 in academics, #4 in athletics and #1 in the arts. Landon might be #2 in academics, #1 in athletics and #6 in the arts. (Don't go crazy, I'm just making up rankings right now.) The point is, each of these schools does some thing or things very well for their students. Find the one that best fits your child's interests and talents.

Now . . . back to crazy talk about a sport that very few of us have ever played but at which we are all total experts!

Here's my breakdown of the IAC.

Landon v Bullis for 1st

Prep v Saint Albans for 3rd

SSSA v EHS for 5th

No matter how you slice it, the IAC has to be one of the most competitive conference in there nation.

Gonzaga will be the best in WCAC, then PVI, Dematha. It should be an exciting season

St Albans got a transfer Faceoff guy that will get St Albans the ball much more often, but the depth and talent at St Albans is not as great as the other IAC schools.


Prep has always had talent. It's the coaching situation that has been a distraction. Let's hope that has been settled, and the Little Hoyas can focus on what they used to do best -- playing lacrosse.

If you saw a St Albans game last season, you could see the obvious - when they had the ball, the offense was potent. Problem was they rarely got the ball, losing almost every faceoff. The FOGO pilfered from another school should change things. But not enough to hide the real problem with that team - no star defenders, and absolutely no bench.

The more interesting story in the IAC will be which program is most losing its luster. Landon should win the conference, but too many close games will have the Bear-haters gloating that the era of dominance is coming to a close. Bullis either filled the gaps created by an extremely talented graduating class, or they didn't. If the latter, they'll be at or near the bottom. SSSA also lost a lot of talent, and were not aggressive enough in their off-season recruitment. I just don't see them anywhere but near the bottom. Not sure what to make of the Maroon, except to say that they really need to follow in the football program's steps and recruit Canadians.

If we are going to discuss lacrosse we should. I'm pretty sure the Bullis lacrosse team last year was made up of players that started at Bullis in Middle School. I heard of only 1 transfer player on that team
