I honestly think race and privilege are a huge factor. At Banneker, a white kid does not get to benefit in any way from his race. The standards are so high that he can't even depend on the whole "my white kid will do fine anyway" mantra that some people believe. That must be just plain scary to many folks -- not only to be a very small white minority, but also to compete on even footing with black students, without being able to rely on any comparative advantages of race or class.

Agreed. I think the fact that Banneker is predominantly AA explains at least a small part of the avoidance for some white families--whether they're aware of this or not--as this research also suggests:

any school showing progress should be commended, but let's not forget that we have 2 years of data, a relatively small sample size, and a standardized test vendor which can be described charitably as a work in progress.

How do they contradict each other? Banneker is essentially an all black school. People say they do worse at SATs than other schools but those other schools aren't all black. It would give you a better idea if you compared Banneker AA performance to another school's AA performance.

Banneker is a successful school. So are a number of other majority AA schools (Shepherd, KIPP, etc). Don't be so desperate for DCUM acceptance.

MyschoolDC hasn't been updated with the most recent scores. That was their score in 2015; they showed big gains this year in both ELA and Math. http://results.osse.dc.gov/school/402

Also, Banneker is an application only school but it is not a test in school.

If that were the reason, we should also expect white parents to avoid all white schools, because their kids would also not be able to rely on any comparative advantages of race, as everybody would be white.

Which is why there's this new trend, all white boys are crowding out blacks at Anacostia High
