I find natives easily impressed and a little pompous, considering that they grew up in a far more modest area than what the transplants transformed D.C. into. Natives can pretend not to understand, but it becomes predictable.

Well its usually because their so called "superior" city provided them ZERO employment opportunities unlike the DC area. I'm sure London, Pairs, NY, San Fran, Austin etc are all GREAT CITIES when you are EMPLOYED. They couldn't make a decent salary in their "superior" city so they had to come to one where they could. Its a humbling experience for them. So they will bash all day but never actually LEAVE LOL
+1000- I wonder the same thing about people who move here from Indianapolis, Columbus OH, or just some podunk town from "middle america". If this area sucks so much, why don't they just move back to where they came from.
See, I can't imagine why anyone would think the natives are angry. :sarcasm:

This thread is ridiculous.
The 0.5% of transplants who can't stand DC and either think it is too busy, rude, expensive, and full of traffic? You just can't hack it.
The 0.5% of transplants from NY/London/Paris who say that DC isn't a real city and can't compete with the bright lights back home? You're pathetic. I don't know why you are so insecure. Try to get out some instead of sitting around lamenting what you left behind.
The 1% of DC natives who can't stop moaning about how DC isn't like it was in the glory days, and about how all the transplants can't pronounce Glover Park correctly or stand on the left or some other nonsense? Get over yourselves. Cities change. That's what happens. If you can't hack it, go ahead and leave.
The other 99% of you? You guys are great. The mix of natives and transplants, young and old, the whole shebang - you all mix together and make DC a great place to live. This transplant loves it here, and his native wife does too. And neither of us can wait to see what happens next in our awesome city.

I don't know anyone actually from hear who over and over and over wants to talk about people from "the district" or "DC proper" versus "the burbs." nobody here uses these phrases that I've ever known.
We talk more like this:
I'm from the DC or I'm from the DC area. Really, me too - where did you go to high school? Oh, did you know ____? Where are you living now? Oh, blah blah blah.
We say "inside the beltway" or "outside the beltway." We never say "burbs."
We do sometimes say "exburbs" though, particularly for Loudoun County. Frederick is just "fredneck" or for some "Urbana." Howard is just Howard.
x2. They should write this in a pamphlet for transplants to read so they all don't sound so goddam provincial and annoying.
And I will take your pamphlet and throw it in your goddamn smug faces, and DARE you to do something about it.
Who in the HELL do you people think you are? You own nothing--absolutely NOTHING--but your shitty, crumbling, overpriced houses. Stay in your own lane and keep living in the past about how great this place used to be, but you WILL deal with the fact that transplants have come, we are here, some of us will stay, some of us won't, and there isn't a DAMN thing you can do about it.
I will call DC and it's surrounding areas whatever I want, and you won't do anything about it. Ever. Except get on here and complain about it, because that is the extent of your power and influence as a "native".
Eh, [b]we can laugh at you behind your back and exclude you from plenty of clubs and social events because we think you sound (and are) provincial. Just like I'm laughing at the burst of rage you seem to be experiencing at the fact that natives look down at you.
Seriously- get a fucking grip, dude.
Your area high school is calling - they say they want you to give them 1982 back.
Loser.
You'll never get into my clubs *or* parties, so I'm not worried about you.
Oh, the transplants have clubs now?
Do go on... this should be entertaining...![]()
You wish you knew.
Ha! The most popular thread on DCUM is about country clubs.
Sorry, bud. No one cares about transplant "clubs" (if they even exist at all). Most people care about native clubs.
It's just reality.
The reality is: you wish you knew.
Maybe if you repeat it several times it will be true...
Many of the natives I have met talk about their high school glory days. They went to ok colleges. No one in their 30's and 40's cares about what you did in high school.
For the record, I went to an elite high school in NY and went to ivy league schools. I don't talk about high school, college or grad school.
Get a life.

Transplant here, and I detest this area. I cried when I found out we had to move back after being away for ten glorious years.
Now I'm here, and it's all about escaping at the first opportunity. There is no thrill, just dread.
I realize this is late but I must say, really guy? She can't say she doesn't like the area because she is in Bethesda? I know this thread is about natives vs transplants but why be a jerk to someone who admits they had a bad day?
Fairfax getting you down?
I realize that was a pretty awful post. I'm just having an off day, I don't really hate it here. It's just not my preferred area and the summer months here are really unbearable. I am fine and even like/love the area in the fall though.
Not in Fairfax, but in Bethesda.
So you don't actually live in DC. Why are you in this thread?
