Your short cuts always add extra time to family trips yet you insist it's your way or the highway. You just have to be the one telling everyone how to get to their destination. You've been there before -- we KNOW, we KNOW. The age of GPS has put a serious crimp in the styles of personalities like yours, and yet you persist in pretending we'd be lost without you. That family reunion, where all the "fun" cars arrived hours after you? And we claimed to follow your directions "meticulously"? We stopped at a bar.

You wanted kids so badly you named your three black labs your future kids' names you used to write in curly-cue handwriting in the borders of your notebooks when you should have been paying attention in high school. It never occurred to you that the future would someday be the present. You treated those dogs like your widdle biddy babies. Do you love mommy? Yes you do! Yes you do! Sit! You got rid of one black lab at a time as you had kids and of course named them. You couldn't have a black lab AND a human baby named Bonnie, now could you? That would just be crazy! When your deaf old Uncle shouted, "I THOUGHT THAT WAS THE NAME OF THE DOG! WHAT?!!" during Thanksgiving dinner, you pretended not to hear him. Your family knows better than to mention your "widdle baby" black labs now. Besides, they are happier living on that farm anyway.

Your kids have not thought to ask you yet who they were named after. But they will, PP, someday in the future. Oh yes, they will.

Jane is named after her great aunt. Susan was named for the lovely neighbor who brought you a plate of brownies when you first moved in and Laura was a name your husband simply adored. Jane is 55, Susan is 46, and Laura is 43.
