OK, you used these real estate guys (e.g. Darrell) to find rentals, or you bought? If the former, what were his fees? I knew brokers were common (sometimes essential) in NYC, but didn't realized they were used in DC as well.

Thanks for the info! We haven't lined up movers yet, as I keep fooling myself that July is still a long ways off. Will let you know if we find a good one.

We're not taking the place zoned for Murch, but it is an exceptional deal. Tony Taylor, at DC realestateguy.com showed it to us. It's on Ingomar Place. There's another house for rent on Nebraska right by there that also looks good.

We're at Brooklyn Arbor now, a public (non-charter) school that opened 2 years ago in S. Williamsburg. It's been great & we are sad to leave. I'd love the agent recommendations - thanks!
I totally get your decision about the house, in spite of convenience issues. One of the things that sold us on the move to DC was just the opportunity to live differently than we are currently in our cramped 2-br apartment.

yes, just a basic filter (brita, pur, etc.). Unless there is a specific lead pipe issue with that house. That happens with some older homes. You can do a simple text that you buy at a hardware store, collect sample yourself and send it to a lab.

Like a pur filter? No need for reverse osmosis or anything?

that's true for all of DC. I wouldn't drink the water here at all (not like NY with that wonderful reservoir of clean water upstate). You can just get a filter to put on your sink.

Good luck OP. For what it's worth, we drive to the SS Whole Foods from Petworth, and just had dinner at 8407, from Petworth... You are pretty close to bus and metro. And you are right, Petworth isn't close to a lot of services easier, it's just closer in to the bulk of DC. I think SP sounds great!

Shepherd Park via CA here. Yes, SP is definitely too far afield for some. The Murch house might've been great, but sounds like you wanted to try something new, so more power to you--you're owning your decision. Despite SP being admittedly less convenient in some respects, I think you'll find the neighborhood charming. Today I went for a walk with the husband, kid, and dog after work--70 degrees and sunny, birds chirping, flowers blooming. Fingers crossed the inspection works out!

Metro's less than a mile away. I will learn to drive. Peapod and amazon deliver a lot of crap. The bus around the corner seems to go to the whole foods and cvs in silver spring. Like I said, it's an adjustment... but I spent a lot of time on streetview and most of the places closer in had similar issues with proximity to stores. Petworth, for example. We saw 4 houses there--they all seemed great. All of them had less shopping.

there is no metro in SP.

the busses in DC suck.

I know in nyc you cant get everything under the sun delivered but in dc that really isn't the case.
