Shall we do the Fannings as a pair? Yes.

First, Dakota. I love Dakota. She's the OG. She seems like a great big sis and paved the way for Elle. Also I saw an interview with her recently where she was very honest about wanting to find love and it was so vulnerable and charming and now I really want that for her too. This is very pretty. Her boobs like mildly tortured. She is doing that Fanning thing where her dress and her skin and her hair are all just different shades of the same beige. Okay. Still, she looks good.



Next, Elle. You guys. Was this on purpose? Were you pulling a Parent Trap gab at the awards? Did you switch seats halfway through to see if anyone noticed? I mean, no, they aren't the same dress. Different neckline, different (pale, neutral -- okay Elle's has some blue in it but it reads as silver in most photos) color. Both dresses suit them and are pretty, but also they both dress this way all the time and now wearing such similar dresses on the same red carpet... it's a yawn for me. I'm bored. Which is too bad because Elle just did an amazing fashion spread for WWW that is so fun. Where's that girl? Sigh. Anyway, pretty dress, she looks good, blah blah blah.

Here are two dresses by Loewe that I really hated!

First, Eva Victor. The color is great, the shape is hideous. This is apparently a theme for their red carpet work, as we'll see. She spent the evening gripping at the drop waist, as I think the dress was both too long and hard to move in, and also fussing with the strapless neckline, which either didn't fit well in general or just couldn't deal with the weight of the dress. This is a bad dress.



Next, and this one kills me because her costar looked so great, we have Inga Ibsdotter Lilleas (Sentimental Value). The color is interesting -- another yellow green but rendered in a pale, spring shade. I could like it! Except the shape of this dress is stupid. Yes, yes, avant garden blah blah blah. I don't know, it just has no relationship to her or her body or her personality or anything. Classic case of a dress wearing a woman. Too bad because I loved her in that movie and think she deserves a spotlight. But not like this.

Meanwhile, Amy Lou Wood showed up in an extremely similar Vivienne Westwood and I love it! It looks like a windswept moor and makes me want to see her in a period costume drama. She is channelling a little bit of Helena Bonham-Carter in this, which is a comparison I think she should cultivate. She usually looks mildly awkward and out of place on red carpets, IMO, but not here. I think this is a style high for her.

This is how I know Ariana is waaaaaaay overexposed right now. Because this is a great dress (I love Vivienne Westwood), I love the texture of the fabric, it fits her well and suits her generally. And also, I'm so over it. I never want to see her in another ballgown ever again. In fact, I'd be good going a solid 2 years without hearing from this lady at all. It's not her fault. The Wicked marketing machine is a juggernaut. But I want out.

Still, that fabric is really cool.

Agree. This is awful. She is beautiful and this dress is not. It looks like an old slip of my grandma's that was never cool or fashionable.

Tessa Thompson. This is Balenciaga. I said upthread that Rose Byrne's green dress was my favorite and I stand by that -- her shade was so unexpected. But this chartreuse color is actually my green white whale (my green whale) this year. I'm obsessed with this shade and really want to pair it with olive green. It's hard to find in general though. I *love* it in this fabric, which looks like scaled armor, and it's great against Thompson's coloring. Shape is simple and classic but the color and texture is doing a lot of work. Thumbs up.

Zoe Kravitz. I hate it! She and JLaw had a little competition for ugliest lingerie worn as a red carpet dress and Zoe won. I mean they both lost, as did my eyes, but this is hideous. Also the fact that I can see the outline of her underwear is so, so stupid. It's the Golden Globes. This is a Saint Laurent. It doesn't feel intentional, more like "oh well, it's see through, moving on." Hate.

Jessie Buckley. For her this is really tame and actually really well fitting and not that weird. She loves wacky fashion. Yes it looks a little like a repurposed bridesmaids dress from the 80s, especially with the matchy shoes. But the details are super lux (it's Dior) and I actually kind of love the pattern on the fabric and the length. Plus the color is great on her. I think if you got rid of the weird neckline and drape situation, it would be boring, but also I don't like those elements?

However her hair and makeup looks amazing, maybe the best she's ever looked. Just fresh and natural and lovely, and I love this hair style, length, and color on her A LOT.

Hannah Einbinder. I think this manages to be both "boring and staid" and also ugly. So kudos for that. The combination of the very deep v and then the black v of the skirt created by the drooping blue panels is deeply unflattering. Also she went "Hollywood Glamour" for her hair and makeup which makes her look middle aged. I think it's just poorly executed, but also that it doesn't really work with her personality or her vibe. Compare to Selena Gomez who was Hollywood Glamour head to toe but flawlessly executed and perfectly suited for her. You have to match the look to the woman.

I said upthread that I liked the weird Emma stone and Emily blunt dresses for them. I also think the Christmas ornament dress works and is fun.

But j lo and j law are both just hot messes. The j law fail is sad because that weird stole looks awesome and if the dress under it were something simple, it would be very cool. But it’s like one of those dresses where the designer has to do everything — mesh and embroidery and frillery and boobs and butt and abs and legs all exposed …. It’s visual cacophony. A dress should have one of two things that draw the eye. I think that’s why Emma stone and Emily blunts work — they each are structurally odd but otherwise quite simple. And the chase dress has the mirror effect and the structural thing, but in classic colors and a pretty modest style.

08:58-- maybe that is exactly what they were going for? Half assed

All the green dresses are my favorites, so refreshing. And Jen G's, now that I've looked at it more closely.

I don't disagree but also that's kind of what I like about it?

I like the drama of the weird hard skirt attached to the bodice and then this sleek, sweeping underskirt with a train. It's interesting, and because she's sooooo pretty on her own, it's okay that the dress itself is not exactly beautiful. It works for me.

I think it's fine on a Tuesday dropping your kids off before heading to work. Not amazing, but looks healthy and easy.

It feels like such a cop out on a red carpet. The outfit is already so weird from the front (it winds up looking like it's too big and the skirt is falling off and the top is too large, even though when you see it from the side you can tell it's perfectly fitted to her body and the issue is in the design). But then the hair like... blaaaaah. It winds up looking very half assed.
