My guess it they will start a "freeze" social security disability payments while they conduct a "review" to determine which ones are "fraud." That would be in line with how they've done the USAID and NIH cuts. They will go after SSDI first because that's not as politically popular.

SSDI is retirement for a huge percentage of blue collar workers. It's going to become real popular pretty quickly once it stops

This is true in a way you wouldn’t expect. SSDI brings with it Medicaid/Medicare. Lot of 60 year olds out there who are trying to get SSI/SSDI more for the medical insurance that the money.

Everyone— even IQ of 45, never learned to walk or talk and wears a diaper— is re-reviewed every 1 to 7 years, depending on how close to retirement they are and the likelihood of their condition improving. New medical records, brand new look. And we can’t keep up with that and our other statutory caseloads. Cut us 50% and see if anyone ever has a CDR again.

Also SSDI is the politically popular one because it’s earned and paid into through FICA and is financially solvent. SSI is the welfare piece where with all the “fraud” is. All $400 a month that you get. If you are going to discuss SS disability (and it’s important. We should be discussing it), master the basics.

Also, as someone who spent last week trying to get someone on SSI before he died of stage 4 cancer (because he’d been waiting 15 months in our backlog while his house went into foreclosure and SSI doesn't do back payments for his family if he died before he went into pay status)— I can assure you that it really is not easy to commit fraud and get on SSI. Like anything regulatory, you get mismatches— people who probably could work but clearly meet the regulatory requirements and get benefits and people who clearly cannot work and also can’t qualify because one lab number is off. It sucks, but us unelected bureaucrats have to follow the law, we don get to decide that the regulations give us the wrong and ignore it.

Also, bite me Elmo. Every 5 point bulleted list I make telling you I did CDRs is a CDR that doesn’t get done. Efficiency my a@@.

If not private pension company would back as with a pool of only those people willing to participate then it is not a solvent program.

For the millionth time, SS is not a 401k. It’s an insurance program. It’s designed to support all workers, including those who would not invest wisely, or those who did not have the disposable income to set aside money for investments. Why?
