If you ever look at the returns coming in for Florida, you can always see Gainesville lit up as a big spot of blue in the surrounding red. Gainesville is pretty progressive, because of all the educated people.
I have family members that have been on faculty there for decades. It's true that the school has really come up over the last few decades and is really well regarded, especially in certain disciplines. But it's also true that the DeSantis admin has really tried to wreck that, and they've had a lot of great professors retire or quietly move to new universities over the last couple of years. I think faculty is super loyal to UF, and doesn't want to be too vocal about the damage, but it's definitely there. The question is whether it's still a superficial wound that UF can recover from, or whether DeSantis is really going to permanently undermine the progress that a lot of dedicated faculty and admin have made over the past few decades.
Also, UF historically gets a TON Of NIH grants and other federally sponsored research funds....so all the Trump admin cuts, including the cap on the NIH grant overhead, is going to hit them hard in the STEM departments. It affects undergrad experience because if they have to significantly cut their PhD programs (due to lack of opportunities in labs), they have fewer grad students to teach classes, and also fewer new profs coming into tenured spots, and also fewer (maybe no) research opportunities for undergrads. It's not great, but all the research universities are in that same boat, I think. But UF does get a ton of that money and that research strength is a big reason why the university has improved so much over the past few decades.

The biggest issue when I was in college (in FL but not UF), was that my UF friends wanting to go to grad school, had a difficult time finding full or assistant professors for LOR. Either classes were huge, they had an adjunct, or they largely interacted with grad students.

This is likely an issue for any very large R1 school and could have gotten better with time at UF specifically. Or, if your kid is uninterested in grad school. If they are interested, however, it’s something you may want to check out (no matter the school)

I'd bet by and large that most people, US News rankings be cursed, would consider UMD every bit to be UF's equal.

In fact, I'd venture that many would view UMD as a notch or two above UF (and that's no shade at UF.....it's a fine school in itself).

Why do you think that? Is it that you or your kid went to UMD? Or is it just your anti-FL bias?

I get that they may not consider my experience relevant, which is why I included the year I graduated for reference. It was intended as kind of a disclaimer or in lieu of saying “I don’t know if this is still accurate in 2025 but heres how it was 15 years ago…” I also wound up going to grad school at uf too and didn’t move away from GNV til 2013. I do realize it’s likely different now largely due to DeSantis (a huge negative) but also it has gone up significantly in rankings as well (a positive)
