Michelle Obama’s book hits on this, their childhood in Chicago before the gangs and poverty moved in.
Kids of all colors and creed played in the parks until dinner time. Families dressed up and went to church and temple. People were part of positive communities.
School had textbooks, high expectations, discipline, and parents backed them up.
