Maybe they’re both good schools and maybe IU is better than 8th in the state of Indiana.
I think people are going in circles on this thread. The original post started off with wondering if IU is better than JMU being OOS for both. Clearly, IU is a better pick then.
The real question for DCUMland is would IU be worth the extra cost if one had a choice between the two and JMU was in-state. Is IU worth the extra $80-$100K? Let's say business school.

Yes, this is my question too. We are VA instate. DC was accepted to Kelley and likely to JMU. Obviously JMU is cheaper, but it’s not clear which is the better choice.

You live in Indiana but are on this page? Weird
DCUM posters tend to be from all over the country. Most forums here aren't specific to Washington, DC. If this person were active on the Arlington schools forum, that would be weird. The college forum, not so much.

Indiana does not outrank Purdue, Notre Dame and at least 2 or 3 Indiana LACs. Give it up.
Dumb take. The only Indiana school clearly better than IU is Notre Dame. IU and Purdue are peers. Each excels in different areas. Purdue is the clear winner for engineering, but sure as hell not for business.
As for LACs, DePauw and Wabash come to mind as offering a high quality education, and they might be a better fit for certain students, but they don't "outrank" IU.
That said, every school I just named is miles ahead of JMU.
In other words IU is like 6 or 7th in the state.
^^^ JMU math skills.
