I think that this is a healthy change.
I appreciate those who express concern about the curriculum changes and the overall guiding principles of the soon-to-be-new New College of Florida, but the current New College of Florida is more of a failure than it is a success. Change is needed as the new College of Florida is in a continuing path of decline. Taxpayer dollars should be used to fund core subjects in education.
Whether you like or dislike Governor Ron DeSantis' stance, it is a message that needs to be heard and considered by all just as opposing viewpoints should be. Governor DeSantis and the Florida legislature were elected by the people of Florida and I believe that he reflects the majority opinion of the voters in his state.
Awesome! Then perhaps you can explain a few things. Why is He getting rid of just Black sororities and fraternities rather than ALL sororities and fraternities? Why is he getting rid of resources for students that emphasize support for ethnicity — and not all similar resources and programs? If the focus is on “core subjects in education “, is he getting rid of all of the sports and recreational programs? If not, why not?
How did he go from a baseball playing Yalie to this?
And of course if his priority was truly using tax dollars well, I’d really be interested in the funding for the Martha’s Vineyard stunt.
Could you please source that. I have googled and searched unsuccessfully for that.

I think entire country is getting sick and tired of equity, even POC.
But of course you can’t be bothered to support your assertion with actual data. If you’re sick and tired yourself, just own it.
"I think" represents an opinion, not a statistics. Just learn to read before you jump into data analyses.

Are you being deliberately obtuse? Because "equity" has been around forever. See my previous post about these classes being taught in the 90's. He's only gotten stupid people believing they are somehow new or some part of some new "woke" agenda. God, you people are dumb.
This cartoon was in another thread, it's from 1959, conservatives were freaking out about teaching equity in schools all the way back then.

My kid's dorm room at GW had a kitchen. Lots of school dorms have kitchens.

Anonymous wrote:Gender studies and "ethnic studies" (and the like) have been around since I was in college in the early 90s. Not sure why Ron has decided that they now need to be eliminated. I, myself, too ethnic studies and it was a required course (I had the choice of several different related classes to choose from).
While I can't say I felt it contributed to my overall knowledge, it didn't hurt either. There were some good discussions, even back then, and helped my critical thinking via the writings we did.
This was in Ohio, btw, hardly some liberal bastion.
The only reason -THE ONLY REASON- he is doing this is to whip people into a frenzy over nothing. Zero. Zip. Nada. He's made a non-issue, an issue. And wasting everyone's time.
This is the first step to facism, btw. Colleges should be open to all thought (even the ones I disagree with) and taught openly. The fact this is even being considered is highly objectionable and concerning. Not because some employer will/won't want to hire the kid coming from a school that eliminates these classes -they won't- but because of the path this sets us on. This is not elementary school with young kids in it. It's college. And absolutely should not be meddling in or dictating what they teach in this matter.
Shame on anyone who support this.

And for the other HBCUs in Florida? And for the HBCUs in other states?
I remember people thinking that I was exaggerating when I said that my greatest fear was that if Trump won the presidency, the Supreme Court that he would have the opportunity to create would irreparably doom this country — at least for those of us who champion the ideals represented by the Constitution. I wasn’t exaggerating.
A lot of “moderates” thought a lot of us were exaggerating. Turns out they just aren’t very forward thinking.
