Why do people think it's okay for their dogs to do this?
I'm a dog lover. I have a 2-year-old, high-energy dog, who would love to bark at every person/dog/squirrel/mailman. But I don't allow him because it's rude and he is not allowed to threaten people.
Yet, it never ceases to amaze me on a walk through our neighborhood how many dogs are aggressively barking at us as we pass - low-pitched, rapid barking, often jumping up on the windows/doors. They bark at me, my kids, my dog...
I feel especially annoyed at people who allow their dogs to do this to the mail carriers. Mail carriers do a really hard job anyway, they shouldn't have to feel terrified because your dog attacks the door when they drop off your Amazon package. One time, I saw a UPS driver leap down a neighbor's front steps, sprinting away from a house with an aggressive-sounding dog lunging at the glass door and barking.
Not to mention the people who just leave their aggressive barking dogs out alone in the yard to surprise terrorize anyone who walks by... You think your just walking by another fence and then cujo is suddenly right next to you!
I can't imagine why their owners think this is okay and they don't train their dog? Maybe just that they don't realize what their dogs are "saying"? Do they realize and they just don't care?
Maybe the dog just doesn't like you, OP.

The mistake people make is thinking that all barking is aggression. It's not.
My dog will bark for attention - like hey buddy, come over here and play with me and he drops his ball accordingly to say he's willing to give it up.
It's mostly people without dogs who don't realize this. They hear a bark and think it's automatically an alarm, which it often is, but as I say, not always.

The problem is that most dogs are really dumb. So you might want your dog to bark at intruders but it also means it barks constantly at your 2 yr old grandchild whenever she visits and as a result you don't get to see your grandchild very often AND she's now terrified of dogs.
Or if you train your dog to bark at intruders maybe this means you can't take them to public parks or patios or whatever because they will loudly bark at crowds of people enjoying the park or having a beer.
I don't care if people's dogs bark in their own homes (though I might if I'm a neighbor and it's constant) and while I don't love dogs that bark at me as I walk past, that's life. But I get really annoyed at people who are like "My dog is antisocial, it's great!" and then get mad when that antisocial behavior impacts their ability to interact with the rest of the world. If you want people to visit you, or to be a blessing to take your dog to public places, you have to train your dog to chill the eff out around other people.
