Yep. TV writers too often think their audiences are dumb. Either trust us to pick up on what's going on without the flashing light exposition, or do a better job writing natural dialogue that works in the exposition in a more seamless way. This is just lazy writing.

Interesting votes! I don't get the fixation with Sophie as Kevin's one true love. I always felt like his yearning for a relationship like his parents clouded his judgment with her.

I can see what you’re saying. Perhaps this episode would’ve been better in previous years, but in its final season? Did we really need to see all that (and only that in the episode) to learn more about Jack? There’s so many other loose ends that we haven’t learned about that are more important/interesting.
Did the writers change? It just seems like the show was falling flat.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I thought the episode about Jack's mom was beautiful. Jack had an incredibly painful childhood and much of how he tried so hard to be a good father came from those experiences. We never did learn what happen to his mom once he helped her move out, so I think it's nice that they tied up her story. It was so very said, especially at the church when he notes that they had both tried hard to carve out new lives for themselves. I thought it was incredibly poignant. Here she had this new and entirely separate life that he had known nothing about - I hate to say it, but he never asked. And the triplets were six years old and had *never* been to Ohio to visit their Grandma? That just seemed incredibly unrealistic. My heart broke for Jack, especially during his eulogy. But it did beg the question, why didn't he make the effort to take his family to spend time with his mom?

Very beginning of the episode where she goes to Boston, Randall says something about going to study with a friend, maybe named Carol, for the whole weekend. He mentions the girls name but I forgot it. So she lied to him. But I am curious why he didn’t confirm with friends parents she was going there.

Randall says to Deja "So you and Tish/Trish/Tiff (?) going to be studying all weekend?" and Deja says something like "mmm hmmm" (agreeing sort of).
It was part of the "previously on TIS" at the beginning of the current episode as well. Deja implied that she was hanging out with a female friend.
The friend was Tiffany. The next morning, when Deja is headed home from Boston on the bus, Randall texts her, "How was breakfast at Tiffany's? Ha ha!"

The Cassidy thing is just weird. Other than sleeping with her the one time, there was never any romantic chemistry between them.

I have never heard this in real life but it does seem to happen in movies and TV a lot. Cousin Eddie, anyone? Cousin It? Cousin Oliver?
Also, nice to see Ellenor from The Practice in what was otherwise a dull episode.
