I am starting to think that it would be better to wait another year, but will they not be behind if they only get into the AAP in fourth grade?

that iswhat I am thinking. My DD is third grade at a gtc, and was assigned at 300 page book in the first part of the year. Poor reading skills would be a problem.

I agree that it would be hard for a child who is behind in reading to keep up in the AAP program. In my daughter's 3rd grade AAP class they threw them right into reading books that were a 5th/6th grade level. Even the math required reading and writing.

There is nothing wrong with waiting a year to get your sons DRA level up and then trying again in 3rd grade.

Thanks for that advice I was thinking along that line to appeal or not to appeal more because of his low DRA levels.

i think you should consider whether you really want to appeal if your dc reading level is a 14 mid way thru 2nd grade. my dc is a 36 and was accepted today. think of all the competition at the aap school from other children much farther ahead. remember, all the kids accepted are now in the top of their class. Once they get to the AAP center, some of the children will now make up the bottom of the class and that could be discouraging. That's just a thought - you really know what's best for your child.

Wow, I've heard so much about not liking your base school. My base is wonderful--a magnet with language immersion. We got in, but it will very difficult to leave.

You can sumbit up to 5 pages of work samples, and 5 pages of letters/commendations, so you could submit that if you choose.

DC had a smilar profile last year, but GBRS of 12 and didn't get it. We submitted WISC scores, a new letter explaining more things (i.e. why her base school wasn't working for her) and her most recent report cards (which were very good). Got in on appeal. I think the schools sabotage kids with low GBRS and bad work samples so they don't lose them.

He was ill and could not take it, but I was also adviced that one score would be sufficient, so I did not worry to much about CogAT, but I reliaze that in retrospect I should have.
My son also has a DRA of only 14 as are from another country so he is still battling with reading skills as he has not been taught how to comprehend reading so this may have also counted against him.

May I ask why your DD did not take the Cogat?

someone posted over here that you can submit "new" samples to replace the old ones. but of course the old scores still apply. unless of course you add a new score from WISC, Stanford-Binet, etc..

I believe in the appeal you must present NEW information to the file. All of the scores are still there. If possible, will you consider doing the WISC?
