Michigan State House Republican Leader Rep. Matt Hall “was accused in 2019 of domestic assault and interfering in a 911 call.”
According to police reports, Matt Hall and his then-girlfriend were driving to Indiana to bet on sports when he realized he had left his money behind and became angry. “He was driving fast and scaring her” the police report states as he returned home to find his bankroll.
When his behavior escalated, the woman took out her phone. The police report says, “He told her to stop recording him and then he forcefully grabbed her phone out of her hand... He used enough force to break the screen... He then told her she was not going to record him.”
This is not the first time police investigated Hall for violent or threatening behavior. Last September, American Journal News revealed that Hall made death threats and racist remarks to another student as an undergraduate.
Matt Hall dismissed this incident as something he did when he was young and naive. But this 2019 police report shows instead that this is a pattern of concerning behavior that continued into his time as a state legislator.
As former MIGOP Executive Director Jeff Timmer told the Daily Beast “This happened when this guy was in the Legislature. It’s recent, and it shows a problem with judgment and anger and behavior that I think is definitely something that is legitimate to be examined."
