What does it mean be can’t be treated for the virus until they know the results? I obviously feel awful for this family and totally understand the desire for a test result. But will that really change the course of treatment?
Probably not, since there is not treatment. But it does concern me that the largest hospital nearest me (where we would go should things become critical), doesn’t seem to have the capability to get rapid test results and/or to communicate to the family in a reassuring way that they are treating the patient as if he has it and are treating him aggressively, as they would (I hope) any younger person in critical condition with pneumonia.
I hate this administration. They have f***ed this up beyond belief.
It's easy to snap out at current politicians when feeling frustrated and angry. But I don't think any other politician would have had a different impact. Look at Europe. They all also waited before making major actions.
Bwahahahaha. You really don't think that political leadership matters? Both in the long and the short term, if we had a president who understood epidemics we would have a CDC pandemic team in place, we would have authorized the CDC to use the WHO test, we would have incentivized labs and private manufacturers to ramp up production of tests, masks, and other essential medical equipment, we would have not made crazy announcements to upset the stock market. We would not have politicized the pandemic and we would not have to hear idiotic statements about transcripts and pleas to avoid testing to keep numbers artificially low. Elections matter.

U.S. officials worried about Chinese control of American drug supply
https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-care/u-s-off...-american-drug-supply-n1052376
Antibiotics, which turn life-threatening infections into minor nuisances, are considered the single biggest advance in modern medicine.
But imagine if the supply of antibiotics to the United States was suddenly cut off.
American national security officials are worrying about that scenario as they come to grips with this little understood fact: The vast majority of key ingredients for drugs that many Americans rely on are manufactured abroad, mostly in China.

China hints at denying Americans life-saving coronavirus drugs

China Threatens to Throw America 'Into the Mighty Sea of the Coronavirus.'
https://nationalinterest.org/feature/china-threatens-throw-america-mighty-sea-coronavirus-130877
The last article in this list is from conservative sources only, and someone in one of these friends found the original Chinese article and this is not what it said.
Regarding the "sea of coronavirus" Xinhua article, I decided to look for myself. The only newssites covering it other than Fox News were conservative media basically all quoting Fox News. I finally found the actual article here:
http://xinhuanet.com/2020-03/04/c_1125660473.htm
After the author's (a blogger?) comments suggesting restricting supplies to the US out of anger over a potential new travel ban (as far as I can tell; I cannot read Mandarin, so I am relying on a friend's translation and Chrome), the author said this (again, machine translation):
However, there is a great love in the world. The Chinese people and the Chinese government have never done so. They have not insulted the United States, nor have they banned the export of masks and medicines to the United States. As China ’s new crown pneumonia epidemic is gradually controlled, China ’s ability to export masks and medicines Will be greatly enhanced, and the United States is one of the demand side.

My “FOX news only” parents got serious yesterday. Not sure if it was the trump outings or maybe when Newt wrote from quarantine (in Italy).

There are very few antivirals that work on respiratory viruses like flu, coronavirus, rhinovirus, adenovirus. Tamiflu survives because it's the only one, despite some potentially large side effects and the fact *it barely works at all* (reduces course of disease by ~10% / 12 hours).
What's needed is a vaccine. And that will take time.
There is some evidence that remdesivir helps: https://www.wsj.com/articles/experimental-drug-helps-some-americans-ride-out-coronavirus-nih-doctor-says-11584094955
