I second this and have seen it happen half a dozen times with my sons friends - Son committed beginning of junior year to atop SLAC went on to play and had a great experience however take off the rosy glasses because I can assure you that no matter how interested a coach might be in the 9th grade once a late bloomer comes around who is a brighter star they will drop him like a hot potato
This is also happening in college. The secret weapon to drop a recruit who won't take a hint when you clip down the earlier promised scholarship money? Don't sponsor the application for admission. Lot of coaches do this now without transparency to the family or kid as easily as breathing, then they have the perfect hedge to say 'admissions decided, I didn't'. Or, if you get in anyways they can just cut your money entirely after year #1 and assure you you'll never see the field. Sure a kid can stay as a practice squad walk on from there, but why spend college years like that. If you think there is scum below in the club or prep scene, just wait until you get to college. The ultimate is when there is a coaching change. Unless you are the #1 - #4 recruit in the class, expect to be released. UVA recruits in particular are exposed since Dom's done after this season. Contract expires after the season and the AD didn't renew him. Amazes me to read kids committing to places where this discord awaits before they get there. Nothing to worry about if you are a great player. But if you are an early recruit who turned out so-so and the only one who doesn't see that is Ty Xanders, some humble pie served cold awaits. In the next 2-3 years you'll see a huge flux of kids dropping and adding. Late bloomers aren't screwed...pretty soon they will have it made. The first freshman commits in large numbers was the 2017 class which are now juniors. A good number of top NCAA coaches are already admitting their hit rate on them was 25% - 40%. They know they have to remedy that and this means only 1/4th to 1/3rd of the early recruits are safe.
