Born at the turn of the 20th century. Nancy was the daughter of a boarding house owner. Her father had died of the flu, but her mother kept the business going. Alfred was the son of Irish immigrants who wanted something better for their son-and they gave him a fancy name to match their expectations. He was just young enough to miss WWI. They met at Coney Island in the early 1920s, and later moved to DC by way of Philadelphia. Alfred studied engineering at Drexel and had some success in the early aeronautical industry, but it was Nancy's ability to run a house full of boarders that save them during the depression. They had 6 children, 3 lived to adulthood.
