The Grand Canyon is literally one of the most magnificent natural beauties in the world — yes there is hype over it.

You sound like someone’s who lived in Arizona yet never experienced Arizona outside of Phoenix. PLENTY of people want to go to Arizona for the different parks and scenery. Sedona, Tucson, Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, etc.


We went to Tucson for our anniversary recently. The desert and "sky islands" were spectacular.

Iceland: the basic bitch destination of Europe rn. Ridiculous number of tourists bombarding a small population-- complete overtourism because of cheap flights to the island.

Venice: complete overtourism, quite sad. Something like 60,000 italians live in venice now, at a certain point it will just be a movie set for tourists to take their instagram photos in

Alaska

most Caribbean destinations, excluding cuba

Cruises excluding maybe European river cruise, but cruises in general are quite bad for the environment

We all have our own comfort zones. I'm sure there are plenty of non-Western world X's (whatever the non-Western world equivalent of "Karen" is) who have no interest in travelling to the West. That doesn't make anyone racist.

I am the PP, just to add that we spent 2 weeks in Alaska with a rented SUV and only did a one-day boat trip to see glacier calving and whales & orcas (amazing encounters) on the Seward Peninsula. It is a misconception that you have to take a cruise to see Alaska. I think cruises are tacky and mostly for old, disabled or boring people. We have seen a lot of the world and have never taken a cruise. The hikes and drives in Alaska were spectacular, and the terrain and wild life were a lot more varied than New Zealand or Patagonia for example.

To OP, both DH and I are avid travelers. We have been to some of the most amazing places on the planet - African safaris, all over Europe in posh hotels, Australia & NZ, Patagonia, Galapagos, all over Asia, northern lights in Scandinavia... I have to say that of all of our amazing trips, Alaska is definitely in the top 3, possibly number 1. I love nature and wildlife photography, and Alaska in July was an incredible experience. I researched for over a year and planned that trip to perfection! It was before having kids. Sadly I don't have the same time, energy and attention to detail with trips these days. Hopefully once kiddos are older we can go back to planning and traveling so we can share our beautiful experiences with them.

I know tons of people who go to AZ in the winter/spring to play golf. Mostly to Scottsdale. Who else do you think is staying in all those fancy Scottsdale hotels? And there are plenty of people, especially on the west coast, who go for baseball spring training games. That doesn't even count the Grand Canyon and other sites.

I will be in AZ next week for a meeting. I find a lot of clients want to have business meetings in AZ in the winter/spring.

I also know a bunch of east coasters who have retired there, for the golf and the weather.

This thread has made me a little sad. I have been a lot of places that some of my friends can only dream of going. My friend saved for 3 years to take his kids on a Grand Canyon trip. Definitely not a throw away destination at all.

Belgium has some street liege waffles and stronger beer, but I can make liege waffles here at home.

It's to the point now where the only city I'm maybe up for going to is Amsterdam because you can smoke weed there. But you can probably do that here soon too.
