Me thinks a lot of the hysteria on this thread could be mitigated by proactive communication with potential gift-giving offenders before the holidays.

Not necessarily... the experience could be going for a hike, taking them to a free museum, going fishing, swimming in a lake in a public park or doing any of the many free/ low cost holiday season activities offered ( zoo lights, Mormon temple lights and nativity crèches, brook side gardens etc). There is no need that experience needs to be seeing an expensive show or game. The emphasis should be on spending time together.

+1. I won't throw it in the trash, but I'll likely keep it for a little while and then donate it unopened in a couple of months.

It's not about you. It's about your kid, who I'm sure enjoys opening up a gift on Christmas.

My kids are 3 and 5. They cannot keep track of who gave them what or how many things they get. As long as they have 2-3 new things - Santa, parents, grandparents or an aunt, they are fine. There have been years where they get so much their presents from us sit under the tree, unopened for a week or more. It took us 2 weeks to open presents from the 3yr old’s BD because he would open one and play with it a lot for 1-2 days before asking to open another.

File this under things that totally didn’t happen

NP. Well, it happened in my house. Took about 4 days for DS to open all his gifts, just from us, his parents. He was also 3 years old that year.

Halloween candy used to last for weeks, too!

Oh god, the relatives that stock up on Kohl's clearance clothes to give for every holiday... Please just stop.

I love and appreciate it.

Wow, is there something wrong with clothes from Kohl’s?

Apparently.

I am not a brand snob, my kids clothes come from Target now, but I stopped buying Kohl’s clothes for them when I found that the colors run and stains will not come out.

Now Kohl's is bad? I bought a cute Vera Wang dress from there for $30. Whatever.
