I think Duke used to get mentioned more for campus beauty than it does now. The Gothic part of campus is nice. But there has been a lot of construction and development and it has always had separated East and West campuses. That might have something to do with it. Duke Gardens is lovely, as is Duke Chapel.


Once you have visited Princeton, Duke seems like a sad wannabe. Duke Gardens is excellent, tho.


But to be fair, I'd say Princeton campus makes most look undistinguished.

Wrong....it is mindless. They insert UVA into any discussion regardless how off-topic it is. And there is a difference between happy students and proselytizing zealots. School pride is wonderful, but this is something else entirely.

Agreed. I’ve formed a persona in my mind about these people who mindlessly bleat on about UVA and yes, I understand that a good number of these are troll posts. I envision a LMC mother who never graduated college and who has had the sole ambition for the past 18 years that their DC be admitted to UVA because they live in-state and it is the best college that they can afford. So UVA becomes the brass ring and over those many years she eagerly hoards and catalogs any mention of UVA as a top this or top that. She lives in this odd little echo chamber bolstered by a veritable smorgasbord of cognitive biases until she becomes this creature who is deaf to all reason and knows only one thing for certain.....that UVA is the best college in the world bar none. And she’ll endlessly share this belief with anyone who will listen and what better audience than us poor souls here on DCUM.


Maybe, but I think it’s much more likely that the typical poster is a woman or man who graduated from the school circa 1988 through 1997 who is very concerned that their kid won’t get in.

Trigger warning: UVA does rank


UVA has a nice campus (grounds), but these types of rankings are usually based on one particular spot, in this case, the Lawn. UVA's campus outside of that area is not close to that level. I see the University of Washington cited frequently in rankings, and that is almost entirely based on the quad near the library when the cherry blossoms are out. As a whole, it isn't a great campus.

Yale being on the list immediately discredits it. New Haven drags everything down.


Yale is lovely. Perhaps best architecture on any U.S. campus.


They have Harvard on the list. Parts are fine, but overall it is not close to being among the prettiest universities in the U.S. in my view, and you actually seldom see it mentioned. Wake is listed as well, and it is a fine campus as well, but not sure why it would be on over places like Princeton. National Autonomous University of Mexico has interesting murals, but is not what I'd consider pretty. If you want a pretty campus outside of the U.S., I'd go with University of British Columbia. St. Andrews has some really ugly buildings, but a unique location.
