Denizens of DC might not have heard of it, but that's because DC is a deeply provincial place.

Truthfully, lots of people. The more people who have heard of and are impressed by a school, the more prestigious it is.

On a more serious note, it's hard to tell if half of these comments are from trolls or actual parents, considering I know a few who have made these types of elitist comments in private.
Sorry, I'm from "the world," and out there had never even heard from U Michigan, and I doubt a single relative or colleague or friend has.
Then your "world" is a very small one. U Michigan is a top school for many programs and those who admit they don't know about it simply show their own ignorance.
Tell me, wise and wordly lady, what is the #15 top university in Germany?
Or in Japan?
Or in China?
Or in Brazil?
And I'm being generous...
Waiting for answers from the wise and wordly PP....
And waiting and waiting...
You're seriously this much of a loser that you post repeatedly for an answer? Newsflash...I'm not a loser who comes on DCUM every day. I have a full time job, a family and a life off of the computer. I posted my statement and haven't been back on DCUM since then. To answer your ridiculous post...
First, it's irrelevant about what the #15 school is in any of these countries because the link that was posted to you was based on WORLD rankings, not country rankings. Also, I have to assume that you live in DC or at least in the US and are posting on a university forum. Therefore, it is not unfathomable to think that you would have familiarized yourself with the universities of the country in which you reside. If I were living elsewhere then I would have done exactly that. In addition, I would not have been so arrogant as to fight those who point out that I didn't know something. I usually use those times as an opportunity to learn something new.
But, to get back to your inquiry...The top universities in the countries you asked about (not going to do the #15 since your assumptions about the link are lacking in comprehension)
Germany: LMU Munich
Japan: The University of Tokyo
China: Tsinghua University,
Brazil: Universidad Federal de Sao Paulo.
Other top universities in the world...
Italy: Bocconi
Netherlands: Leiden
England: Oxford/Cambridge (obviously), but also Imperial College, University College London
Scotland: Edinburgh
France: Paris Science et Lettres. Also Sciences Po which has a dual program with Columbia University
And yes, I know current and former students at most of the above universities, including family members.
Now, it's going to be a beautiful day. I would suggest you do what most normal people do and head outside. I think you need some fresh air and a long walk. Maybe then you can work on the obsessive behavior. Good day.
Blah blah blah blah -- you must be an American academic, probably somehow affiliated with U Michigan.
Which I am sure is a lovely place, but to claim that it is "one of the most well-regarded universities in the world" ... yes, go get some fresh air, ideally outside your minuscule bubble.
+1
I know it's a great school only from all the time I've spent poking around this board, but previous to that I knew nothing about. I'm guessing the "average" person has only heard of it in regards to sports. It's not like Harvard, Yale, Princeton, or Stanford that everyone is familiar with and impressed by. Most people don't have a deep familiarity with the reputations of most colleges outside of the Ivy's (or Ivy calibers) and the schools that are highly regarded in their region. I'm sure every average Joe in the midwest realizes that Michigan is a selective school, but the average Joe on the coasts doesn't

UofM traditionally has always pushed that figure to keep it close and maximize revenue. Example: UofM In state tuition (not including room and board) $14,402 -- Out of state students pay $45,410.
