Interesting post, OP. The wording of your post makes me assume that you mistakenly assumed that your friend was a liberal since you “just found out” that this nice person is actually Republican.

I think this says a lot more about you than it does about your friend. It tells me you have bought into the liberal stereotypes of Republicans as evil and cruel. In reality, that is not true.
This seems to have blown your mind.

Go figure.

So bizarre! Judging someone based on their choice to use their political influence to make other people's lives worse!

What's next? Will we start judging people based on their actions? On the things they say? On the crimes they commit? Is nothing sacred anymore?!

The problem with your characterization is that it's wrong.

Whatever you may think about Republicans or Democrats, their end goal is actually very similar: maximize the happiness of all humans. The disagreement isn't on the goal, but how to get there. Republicans mostly see this and this is why the general feeling of Republicans towards Democrats is that the later is misinformed. Democrats somehow think that Republicans have different end goals, that instead of maximizing the happiness of all humans, Republicans are for oppression and suffering - and in this light it's easy to agree then that people working towards such goals are indeed evil.

I'm truly asking because I didn't get the memo...How are Republicans trying to maximize the happiness of LGBT, women, POC, and those who fall on hard times?

Perhaps by not labeling various groups of people “victims” and expecting society to treat them as such? How refreshing.

And by focusing on the common good for the vast majority of problem, not just on the special interests of very narrow groups of people, as nice and worthy as they may be.

Got it. “Majority” = white men.

Yes, screw those women, POC, etc.

Well, yes, the whole point of Democracy is to govern for the Majority -- that's why it works.

If you prefer a Minority to rule over the Majority, you better move to a totalitarian system.

Your characterization of how American Democracy was designed is so far off base I have to question whether you are even a U.S. citizen.

OMG you know that democracy was not invented here, nor does it only exist here, you narrow provincial Trumpian mind?

(Sorry, that was fun to say to someone who probably feels oh so superior to Trump voters while being as ignorant if not more)

See, you are completely clueless.

What's the largest minority group in our country?

Hispanics.

And what's their race?

Half say white, half say mixed white/ indigenous.

If you continue your stupid racist little war against white people, you're going to be very surprised.

Just when I thought DCUM couldn’t get any more absurd. OP, you are not doing your fellow liberals any favors here.

name 3 examples of a republican policy that helped people and didn't just help a few and screw the rest

You must be joking.

1) Deregulation and corporate tax reform to get the economy growing at 3% and delivering more and better jobs for everyone in the private sector (like, what, 100 million people?)

2) Getting rid of the crazy "Dear Colleague" regulations concerning rape in college campuses that stole the presumption of innocence and essential safeguards from over a million students...because they were male.

3) New laws favoring generic drugs to lower drug prices

You can also argue than a stronger military and the "new NAFTA" are going to help many people.

And the list continues.

LOL. Yes, let’s help the rapey frat bros. They really need help.

I see you have learned from Goebbels how to label, scapegoat, dehumanize and defame others.

I can't believe the PPs that think men need MORE protection after years and years and years of women not being taken seriously when they have tried to report rape, assault and harassment.

Finally calling men to the carpet for bad behavior is not labeling, not scapegoating, not dehumanizing, and not defaming. It's called justice.

I suspect the men who are so up in arms about recent events have reason to be scared. Times up scumbags.

Let us know how you feel about that when your husband, son, brother, father, or friend is falsely accused and no one is interested in hearing his side of the story. Look, it's clear you hate all men and want to see them burn in hell whether or not they committed any crime, but thankfully, civilized society is onto nutcases like you. Due process will be afforded to ALL. Sorry to disappoint you and your fever dream of revenge.
- A wife, mother, sister, daughter, and friend to men.

Mom to UVA frat bro, huh?

Nope, sorry. But I am a mom to both boys and girls and appreciate knowing that all of them would be afforded due process if accused of any crime. I'm not fond of people who jump to the conclusion that someone is guilty without knowing all of the facts and without any corroborating details. Kind of reminds me something...
#Kavanaugh

I’m sure your daughters will be disappointed to learn that you hate women so much.

My DD is 100% more likely to be paid less, sexually harassed, and treated differently by society.
My DD is far more likely to be assaulted, groped, or raped, than your son is to be falsely accused.

I knew 1000 Kavanaughs in college and law school. He did it. You know he did it (prior PP). You have the ability to say "we don't know all the facts" because all the facts were not investigated.

Wow, please learn how to post once - we don’t need to read your nutty conspiracy theories three times. Or even once, for that matter.

Eff you.

You do realize that if anyone had knowledge of him “doing it,” they didn’t have to wait for an investigation to come forward, right? That they could easily have gone straight to the press, done interviews, made public what they knew, correct? Has anyone done so? Nope. And liars like Swetnick don’t count, sorry.

So you can claim “he did it” until your head explodes, but the facts are against you. It’s sad that you’re still peddling a false narrative because you have nothing of substance to fall back on. Sad and disgusting.

Nah. I can read his testimony, watch his testimony, and judge his credibility. All of those things would come into play in litigation and would be used to reach a decision. So, my "nothing to fall back on" are all the same things that would be relied upon in court. And his little tantrum would have buried him in front of a jury. I've tried many cases involving guys like him over the years. My instincts are pretty good.

You're cherry-picking the facts in your little recitation above, btw. And, you don't get to judge what counts and what doesn't.

These are narratives that need to be dismantled. I'm sure he'll give you, the friend, the shirt. But, would he give it to an addict on the streets, an immigrant, a person who kneeled at their football game, a woman wearing a Nasty Woman shirt? Maybe some really would not exclude, but my guess is that most would. This entire OP is trying to reconcile this - but people are kind to those they know and those they approve of. When it comes to everyone else a sense of unease kicks in, so they protect who and what they know.

Not the PP, but exactly the same can be said about highly partisan liberals, particularly those on full display here. Do you think they’re going to “give their shirt” to just anyone? No way would they help someone who voted for Trump, or Republicans in general. Remember, they’ve stated repeatedly that they hope Trump voters get sick, die, etc etc. Liberals have made no bones about their hatred of conservatives/Republicans/Trump voters. It’s entirely disingenuous to pretend they’re helping anyone but people who follow their narratives.

Did I claim that liberals give their shirts more than salt of the earth types? I did not. And, I will not start that narrative.

Do I care if liberals give their shirts to those folks? No, I do not. Because I believe that enacting policies benefits those with addictions, immigrants, POC, and women more than giving them a used t-shirt.

Again, what needs to die is that salt of the earth people are somehow better, nicer, and more giving than people who live on the coast and drink lattes.

But that’s just the thing - exactly the *opposite* narrative is being peddled here on DCUM every single day. Liberals keep saying that Republicans are “evil” people but liberals are somehow more moral and “virtuous.” There are umpteen posts which claim that liberals are “superior” in all ways. I mean, it would be funny if it wasn’t so absurd.

If that is what you are considering viability, then you have only eliminated a VERY small percentage of terminations that occur.

Not to mention most that occur past 24 weeks are for severe medical diagnoses.

I know that relatively few abortions occur after 22-24 weeks, and THAT"S WHY there is space for a reasonable compromise in-between the two dogmatic extremes of "it's my body so I do as I please when I please" and "abortion should be illegal, always"
