What one recruiter did tell DC was that in the past they were interested in UChicago but OCR wasn't worth it because kids didn't show up. Now that there's a critical mass of kids, UChicago is a target school. Hearsay is that the clubs alone are allocated more slots than UMichigan in entirety.
no proof offered of any of these lofty claims. weird...

If your kid wants to go back east after college, UVA Comm school and/or Echols is better. U of C is definitely a nerdy environment. "Where fun goes to die" is the joke. Two different places to be sure, but can't go wrong with either. If money is an issue, choose UVa. If not, let the kid choose.
I'm not surprised. After 4 years enjoying Chicago, a good number of the business oriented UChicago kids are being heavily recruited by NY and SF and they're excited about that. Kids tend to want to experience different places in their 20s. I can see why a UVA kid would love to try out Chicago and a UChicago kid would want to head to the coasts.
Unless things have changed greatly in the last few years there are few Chicago grads working in NY firms compared to their peers at other big schools (why SF? That's Silicon Valley). Chicago is a big place and post-collegiate is always a very different experience than undergraduate, even in the same city. The simple truth is that historically Chicago undergrad has not placed as many kids in the finance/business world. It wasn't that kind of school.
Historically that is very true but times have changed for the University in the last 5 years. The campus is filling with Prep school kids who are supported by one of the largest if not largest career counseling offices in the country. In fact there is a special track for business. Between that, the finance and consulting clubs and the support the kids are getting from Booth alumni in addition to UChicago alums (admitted fewer due to the history but they did very well) placement has really changed. DC and friends have had meaningful internships since freshman year without our help.

Is UChicago worth 80000$/yr? Hell no. It's a miserable school for PhD gunners. Save the money for their wedding or an apartment after college.
What the heck is a ‘PhD gunner’ exactly?
Saving money for a wedding or apartment? Why not just flush it down the toilet now?
To our family money is for education. It’s not for a wedding or an apartment - education is the most important thing. I will be getting an additional part time job for my kids’ education if need be.

Some kids are electing to do that vs the BB or consulting firms. The computer science program is also now heavily staffed by former Berkeley professors which also likely comes into play. Just conjecture of course. I don't really know why but the west coast seems to like UChicago kids.
