For right now, this makes perfect sense. There are many issues to be resolved--for example: PT tests for starters. Does a transgender man have to meet the requirements of a man or a woman? Sexual harassment. This is confusing to people. And complicated.
Sure training can be provided. Training for this costs money and time when we have many hotbeds of activity around the world. And, yes, it appears that the military is attractive to people who wish to transgender because of the healthcare costs. And, think about this, the surgery must surely require a lot of time off from work--as well as the expense. Do we really want to deploy someone who is going through transition?
This is a military readiness issue.
This is not an easy topic. It is complicated and expensive.
It's also expensive to recruit and train 15,000 people who will now replace those being ejected from service.
Bottom line, if someone wants to sacrifice for the liberty and freedom of our country, what difference does it make whether they are white, black, brown, mail, female or trans?
It doesn't.
Any answer to the contrary is simple bigotry.
How about excluding transgender surgery from benefits?
It wouldn't surprise if most of those posters are current military families or vets. Speaking from my own relations, there's a huge amount of white, conservative military families who absolutely despise the progress minorities, women, and LBGT service members have made in the military since WW2. They need someone else to look down upon and feel that these undesirables somehow sully their own service.
They are completely mindf#cked and warped in their martyr-hero complex.

There was a hard deadline and it was mandatory. How can he have consulted with "the generals?" when the generals have all been telling us to get trained up to ensure these people are treated well and properly.

Y'all are a bunch of bullshitting faux concern trolls.
That is absolutely true. However, they are subject to deployment.
And, are you now suggesting that we let transgenders join the Army--but don't let them be deployed? Not be in the Infantry or other Combat Arms? Women have been fighting to get in the Infantry.

And, it is highly unlikely that they are serving at firebases. We have a long way to go to work out the issues before this can happen. For example, women are not on firebases (rare exceptions, if any). So, if you are a transgender male would you be allowed to serve there? A transgender female? You don't understand the problems with this in very, very tight quarters? Ask most war vets--boredom, fear, and the day to day monotony are some of the biggest issues.
There is a lot to be worked out first. Society is still having trouble with this. Let is go first.
