I agree that the timing seems really off. I mean, how hard is it to keep someone alive who's been in a coma for OVER a year? It seems like that would be difficult, even by Western medical standards.

There was a news article that quoted several other released North Korean prisoners who said that they were generally treated well from a health perspective, and not beaten/tortured, and had their health monitored, because NK did not want and American prisoner to die. That's why I find it credible that maybe Otto did have some kind of viral illness that affected his brain and/or caused paralysis. Even something like Guillan Barre. Or an overdose/suicide attempt.

Yes, it sounds very strange. There were other rumors that he had recently been beaten. I guess we will know more if his parents choose to make the results of his medical testing public.

Does anyone think it was strange that they are reporting he was in a coma for a year? So he was in a north korean hospital this whole time? It just sounds strange to me.

I am thankful he is home. And heartbroken for his family. But Americans should not be playing tourist in North Korea. I'm sure he parents feel a tremendous amount of guilt. I know I would.
