This has degenerated into yet another complete bullshit thread. Most of the BASIS parents I know don't even bother visiting or posting here anymore, they just roll their eyes when the subject of DCUM is brought up because it's so skewed and divorced from reality.

FWIW, I know that at least 5 9th graders are zoned for Wilson. So telling us that you would give your right arm for that is meaningless. Warning us about the capriciousness of BASIS DC, however, means a lot to me. So I thank you.

If people really cheat, and the school caught them, wouldn't that explain the 11th grade grades dropping?

I am tempted to ask Mr. Eyerman since he came from another BASIS DC school whether cheating only is happening in DC - that would make it easier to stop, but I don't know how I would do it without identifying myself as a troublemaker.

I really wish that sometime at these coffee hours they would allow us to submit anonymous questions written on index cards because of the real issues of retaliation which have silenced a lot of sensible people who have reasonable questions and/or complaints but now have kids in high school or are there for the long haul.....

he could always skim through them and it might even be more efficient because some people ask questions that they ought to know the answers to. And that way we could have a more honest discussion about what people are really concerned about.

I also really wish that he or someone would type up the contents of the discussions - because some of us have no flexibility in terms of work and cannot get there, or like this time are not a Ward 4 family.

There are local home school/independent learning options that would enable a child to take some classes in College Park in addition to the learning that is done online - parents don't teach. A friend with a nationally ranked athlete does this for her child.

And an 8th grader should be able to be home doing his/her work during the day while a parent works. Is it ideal? Maybe not. But again you are describing a desperate situation. I'm just saying there are options (there is also option of transferring to Francis Stevens, Hardy).

NP - New parents take heed. The Boosters on DCUM (one iin particular) will boost away and swat most criticism away as something being wrong with you or your child. We were SAVED by the dreaded comps. DC still almost got a D because of a piss poor teacher - will not elaborate further because do not want retaliation. Haven't had it yet but know it occurs. Can't wait for 9th grade - not taking any more chances. We have had more than one bad experience. Need to go to a school where the administration actually cares about the student's matriculation and not whether it fits within the BASIS box.

BASIS parent who is not at Deal because of its size and because it is my perogative to attend a Charter. Did shadow at Deal and they teach better but my child would lose focus due to its large size.
