The cop was out of line and he escalated the situation. Cops are taught to de-escalate situations and he obviously did not follow his training. He does not have the right temperament for this job.

However, I don't think this was a "racial" incident. From the video, I couldn't tell that the driver of the car was black. After officer pulled woman over, she was upset and "pissy." Cop asked her why she was upset - which was his first mistake. She explained that she was upset she was getting a ticket for such a minor infraction when she was only trying to quickly change lanes to get out of his way (as we are all instructed to do - get out of way of emergency vehicles.) Cop didn't like her answer or whatever and then he escalated it by asking her to put out her cigarette. He was clearly pissed that the woman was talking and talking and not complying with his requests. He lost his temper big time. He was wrong for being so bossy. He should have written the ticket or given her a warning and moved on. She was wrong too for being a bit disrespectful even though she was in the right - he had no reason to make her put out cigarette, exit vehicle, or arrest her.

However, there is no proof whatsoever that this woman was murdered in jail.

The arresting officer could not have predicted that she would die in jail. So we can't pin that on him.

What happened to this poor woman almost makes me physically sick. She was 28 years old! And, I'm a middle-aged white woman, by the way.

This, for some reason more than all the other shocking incidents that have been in the news recently about AA citizens and the police, really gets to me the most (not that the others weren't terrible; they were).

And yes, I recognize my white privilege more than I ever have before, I think. Of course, a cop would never talk to me that way, and tell me that he would "light me up" with a taser.

Also, I think that part of the reason he may have chosen her to take out his aggression on, is that she said she had just moved there the day before. He chose someone who wouldn't have defenders immediately at hand --what a manipulative coward!

She may have been murdered, but it didn't happen in this video. This video shows wrongful arrest, not murder.

What I find completely interesting is that people will defend the right to wear semi-automatic weapons to Baja Fresh, which terrifies me. But they will claim that unarmed people are dangerous.

Of course not and I don't think anyone is saying he was in the right, but a respectful attitude could have nipped the whole thing in the bud. She could have left with a ticket and disputed it in front of a judge, where, you know, she would not have been in danger of physical harm.

Or, you know, not. She was not in control; the ego-tripping cop with a gun was. She was in danger of physical harm the moment that cop decided to pull her over. his attitude was toxic and dangerous.
