Isn't Amal Clooney Lebanese and Druze? Those groups are white. It's not about what color you feel like they should be.

Furthermore, Greek and Latin were the dominant languages of the Mediterranean world, and those who did not speak these languages were often seen as outsiders or foreigners.
The Romans were not race-blind. Their artwork makes that quite clear. They were aware of white versus black versus Arabs as part of ethnicities and tribes. They did approach the concept of race somewhat differently but they were not race neutral either, it was part of the bundle that formed culture and ethnicities. The Romans were just equal opportunists in who they conquered and enslaved.
