I think it was both, but Don's blowing the IPO was the tipping point.

Agreed - I think this is the real reason and the money issue is a fairly small part. It's about how she demeaned herself so the firm could get a car account, only to have Don sever that account for his usual disdain-for-client/tempermental-creative-type BS reasons. Of course she did it to get the partnership, but everyone got the benefit of it and she bore the whole sacrifice. Plus Don has such a cavalier attitude about money - "I'm already rich, who cares if we lose Jaguar..." so in light of what Joan put herself through to secure her/her son's financial future, I can definitely get why she's had enough of him.

i agree its a joke but they kept my attention w/that long ass break. so much so that i re-watched the entire series again prior to this last season.

i HATE that its possible i may forget some key things again next year. i watched 6 seasons in a month leading up to the April premiere.

I asked the same question. Response from DCUM was that he messed up the potential for an IPO (and lots of money) when he dropped Chevy. Joan had slept with the guy for the business so felt screwed over by Don. I did read one reviewer that said the Joan’s animosity seemed too much and I agree.

Harry is going to flip when he finds out how much the partners are going to make from the buy out. I looked up Don's 10% example, in todays money it would be about 9
.8 million.

+1. I was baffled. I've read reviewers who rewatched the previous season to try to make sense of Joan's sudden animosity, and couldn't do so. They, and we (DH and I), felt it was a clumsy and uncharacteristically lame effort on the part of the creator/writers to introduce new tensions. I agree. It doesn't fit with their previous mutual respect and affection. The money wouldn't explain it all.

The year wait is a joke. Amc is losing viewership because of it.

Just caught up. Ginsburg was my favorite character. So bummed!

Cooper didn't commit suicide. He died quietly in his home after watching the moon landing. He was an old man, and had seen it all.

This is a great interview with the actor who plays Bert Cooper. His glee with the show's ending is so sweet. It seems the meaning behind the song and dance number is simple (not to be delved into too deeply, maybe?):
"It’s very, very interesting that after all the hullabaloo, that [Bert's] saying the best things in life are free, I realize it now and I’m in heaven. It’s not where you go, it’s who you meet along the way. It says a lot if you have that mind set."

I've seen Don and Peggy's relationship as more father/daughter, especially in this most recent episode. So I don't think they'll be romantically involved ever. In this article, Matthew Wiener says about Don and Peggy: Don is "... finally giving Peggy an opportunity to shine. He was pushing her on the bicycle -- he let go [Sunday] night and watched her ride away." So that indicates to me that there's no chance of romance between Don and Peggy. Maybe Don is trying to do for Peggy what he hasn't done for Sally.
