As for your statement that Judaism is "based on your mother being Jewish," that is merely the religious definition of who qualifies as a Jew (matrilineal descent). It says nothing about the religion itself, its core tenets, its beliefs.

Jews are a nationality, ethnic groub, tribe, religion. Someone can convert into it, and be a practicing jew, but not an ethnic jew. Only converts into orthodoxy are recognized by Israel and have to remain practicing to be considered jewish.
