Don't feel bad. At 41 you still have a lot of time to catch up and you know that you need to do it. You are much better off than people who realize at 61 that they should have been saving for retirement all along. You hopefully have 20 good years to catch up. Good luck.

My mom has less saved than I do and my balances are under 100K. I'm 30. I have every intention of providing for her in retirement and don't mind a bit.

Clearly I am behind - most of that was due to going back to school and not having income those several years. We max out our employer-sponsored 401ks now...


I'm 33 and have ~90k (a little less) and felt on track. Am I clearly behind?
