I will say this: when I saw ASA I thought the person meant Arlington and I thought that the number, while high, was not crazy. Arlington is one of the bigger clubs in the state and they have had to deal with the loss of DA, creation of GA, move to ECNL, and now be alert to any other shifts going on. Alexandria has none of that. They are not one of the major clubs in the area. So yes that money is crazy for Alexandria.

There are 5 clubs in this area that have top platform teams for both boys and girls - MLSNext HG/ECNL/GA all to themselves, with no partners. Bethesda, Arlington, Loudoun, Alexandria and SYC. Those 5 also dwarf the other local clubs in terms of revenue. Alexandria is 3rd, behind Arlington and Loudoun but ahead of Bethesda and SYC. On no planet is that not a major club in the area.

And Tommy’s compensation dwarfs every other director. There is a huge disconnect. ASA families and Alexandrians are being taken for a ride by a Board that is too scared to say no to the 40 year old man-child.

Don't disagree on the compensation being too high, but ASA yearly fees are less than most other local clubs

You're basically making an argument for why he might deserve the money he gets, right? Tommy is the person who manages the relationship with the City of Alexandria, including the agreements they have for fees and maintenance. If his work has led to club savings he's doing his job well from the club's and parents' perspectives. The clubs access to regular, quality field space is probably the best thing it has going for it. If you're not paying the club for its services or a board member, his salary does not affect you. If you think Alexandria should be getting more in fees, your issue is with them.

You’re right - I guess the racketeering by a youth sports non-profit to fleece taxpayers to subsidize an extortionate compensation package for a mediocre soccer player - no executive background - director really has nothing to do with - checks notes - soccer.

This is just more nonsense. The City negotiates or sets field fees in a manner they feel gets the most out of the fields. I don't know the details of those deliberations, but they could easily feel that ASA provides the best use of those fields for the community when they are using them and when they are not (like all summer). I assume there's some agreement for shared maintenance into which Alexandria Soccer Association puts money and certainly effort. I'm only speculating but I'm positive you don't know the details either. In any case, the city should make those decisions without any consideration of the salary of the director of the organizations they're dealing with. I assume they don't take that into consideration with any of the community organizations they deal with. It would be absurd.

Or the City could build affordable housing on the fields. Or could sell to the highest bidder. My 9000 sq ft lot is assessed at $1million. How does that transfer to a soccer field?

I think we are on the same page …. The value of the land leased to ASA is seismic. They get a significant break, even get to post sponsor banners on city property. With that break, the Board consisting of biased members looking to score advantage for their children, refuse to control the man-child. And they don’t have to because Alexandrians generously prop up the youth soccer non-profit by providing below market fields. Win for Tommy, win for the Board, loss for the Alexandrians too consumed with failing schools to care.
