That isn't how VHSL is organized. It specifically allows the schools in each district/region to do whatever they want. This goes beyond just swimming, it's across all VHSL activities.

These districts compete against one another at Regionals. They should have a similar district format to give each kid the same footing going into Regionals. The fact that 50% are conducting their meet one way and 50% are conducting their meet another will impact the swimmer results. Having two chances to swim for a seed time is an advantage and one of those times does not include relays which could tire a swimmer out. The swimmers I am focusing on are the ones that will make finals and move on to Regionals, since then the districts will be competing. For example:

Swimmer is swimming 200 free which is right after the Medley relay. In prelims, 200 free is the first event and they will be fresh for it. In finals, they swim the relay and they go straight into 200 free, this could be a disadvantage for a best seed time. But, it is okay, because the day before they were fresh. Finals is also a faster meet where it is not as long of a night as prelims. So swimmers are more likely to be energized and get faster times. They also had two opportunities to drop time if they made finals. This is an advantage.

In timed finals they will not get an opportunity to swim fresh for that 200 free. It will overall be a longer and more tiring meet because of the multiple heats and relays. They get once chance to swim. They also picked their events based on the original format. Swimmers often make choices based on meet format and event order. Some of these swimmers would have chosen different events on the timed finals format.

There is a lot that goes into swimming. These finalist will be competing against one another at Regionals they should be on the same footing at districts. The fact that the DCAs do not understand this says they know little about swimming.

I’ve been reading along with this even though my swimmer is not in one of those districts, and I think the idea is that the districts that are feeding into the same regional meet (because the district meets serve as qualifiers to the regional meets) should be running their district meets under the same conditions.

Agreed. Having Saturday night off is the only positive.

I suggest writing above the DSA level, certainly cc: DSA, but the DSA is just going to double down on the decision like the previous posters DSA’s response. That DSA is just hoping that poster goes away now.

At least with finals tonight and everyone being there it will make the relays kick and there might be better energy. (Literally trying to be positive)

And for parents - you have a free family night! Go out for a family dinner or movie! Free nights are a rare event.

Definitely write your DCA and include the Head Director on it as well. So they know there is a problem. There need to be unified decisions and not this piecemeal stuff. This was not fair across the board.

Sorry my “grace” for FCPS ran out after COVID, Hayfield, and many other incidents. Anytime they touch anything it’s a debacle. This is another case in point in my opinion. Heck FCPS and FCPA aren’t even on the same page. And I don’t blame FCPA.

And unfortunately my employer is not so understanding of FCPS’ last minute changes for a daytime meet. Maybe yours is? Or the doctor’s office that charged me a missed appt fee for my swimmer because the cancellation was within 24hrs.

Still not understanding how different districts get to do different things - eg Liberty still proceeding with prelim/finals.

Not trying to defend them, just trying to find the slimmest of positive news that the kids will swim. Not swimming at all would be far worse. And thankfully it's not during the day, though having the slimmest of time to confirm for today was really beyond aggravating.

I think we are owed the information on why they aren't doing prelims and finals.

National and Concorde aren’t doing prelims and finals because they made that decision mid-week. Patriot isn’t doing both because someone canceled the pool time for Saturday.
