You mean whether MCPS allows them to open? Because it speaks to Thomas Taylor's poor judgement and that is relevant to the fact that MCPS is complete sh$t sh0w right now.
If MCPS buildings are closed due to safety it’s bad judgement to open child care.
Then at least let them open when the high schools open.
That's too late for teachers to get to work.
Let them open unless county government is closed. They can decide not to open if they feel it is unsafe.
Open with high schools means open when the high schools would be expected to be staffed. That's 30-60 minutes before the bell.
It shouldn't be about when schools open. School closure/delay decisions are made based on the need for buses to navigate residential streets. You shouldn't force child care shutdowns based on that standard.
That's a misconception. Buses handle fairly well in the snow due to their weight. They're not the limiting factor. The limiting factor is probably teachers commuting from other areas. But, yes, also doesn't make sense to apply to forced child care closures.
Bus drivers have to get there a few hours before to clean off the snow and get the busses warmed up. And, many kids walk and don't have bus service. For HS, its 2 miles. Often with no sidewalks, crossing multiple busy roads, etc. You think its ok to a HS student to walk at 6:30 AM on black ice on the middle of the road because there are no sidewalks? Multiple kids have been killed this year due to car accidents.

Because there is a troll here who keeps continuously saying very stupid, selfish, and wrong things about why MCPS made the right call about providers closing (despite the fact that MCPS themselves said they made the wrong decision), and the other posters are having a hard time ignoring her (I get it, I am having a hard time ignoring her too becase she's so awful, but it's pointless.)

Can we get back to bigger systemic failures than that one incident?
The SAHP poster doesn't want to talk about that. She just wants to attack women with audacity to work after they have kids.
Actually you keep changing the subject to slam SAHP's (which I am not) and its interesting as you post all day and night so how do you work and have kids and spend that much time on here. The issue isn't about working, the issue is about back up child care. If you were nicer, maybe a SAHP would be kind enough to watch your kids (for the right pay).
The broader issue is that incompetent SAHPs and retirees are the only people that can reasonably serve on the BoE, thus removing the main method of oversight for the school district. Improving the quality of BoE members would lead, slowly, to improvements across the district.

We know. You’d rather have the bitter inflexible working mom brigade. Because everyone shares your personal opinions and you can empathize with those unlike yourself. You’ll open those childcare centers in an icy blizzard with 2 feet of snow so you don’t miss any billable hours. That’ll show everyone.
DP
No, but we will open them when it rains and will also open them less than 3 days after snow has ended.
We at least won't keep them closed after high schools open up. Delays should really mean they open up 30 minutes before high schools so teachers have some chance to get to get to school without being massively late.
Then, offer the minimum wage child care worker rides and get out to the school site with a shovel and clear it for everyone.
If people can get to high schools, why can't they get to elementary schools?
What do high schools have to do with it? If they are all delayed two hours or closed that gives the workers more time to get there or clear. Why can’t you pay one of the child care workers to come to your house and uber them if they don’t drive. Problem solved.
You clearly don't understand how child care works or how high schools work. Do you work in Central Office because that totally tracks.
Yes, I do and I’ve worked in child care. Clearly you haven’t given your unreasonable expectations of minimum wage workers. Bottom line you need a back up care taker.
Your high school comments make no sense. If you need child care you don’t have kids in high school.
DP-- the issue is that MCPS said (and you are also saying) "Totally safe for high schools to be open at 9. Totally safe for all-day child care programs in MCPS buildings to be open at 9. But it would be so horribly dangerous to open any beforecares before 11 so we must prohibit them from opening, even in places where it is only raining.". How do you justify that?
Again this has nothing to do with high schools. You need a back up child care plan. How do you justify risking minimum wage workers lives so you can make a few hundred an hour and never be responsible for your kids?
Oh, you're definitely the troll who was on here that morning taunting and laughing at working parents and completely ignoring any logic. Buzz off. (And everyone else, I'd suggest ignoring her... she clearly gets some kind of weird thrill out of upsetting people, let's not give her the satisfaction. I know it's hard to ignore someone who's simultaneously so wrong and so offensive, but then you're just giving her what she wants.)
Of course it is. It's the same poster that complained about reopening after covid, too. She has a distinct tone.
This poster constantly complains about child care. They need to make a back up plan like the rest of us do. Mcps is school, not child care. They rest of us figure it out, why can’t they?
Thank you for demonstrating so clearly why it is bad to put SAHPs on the BoE.
You make no sense. Why would a SAHP need back up childcare?
Do you disagree that WOHPs need a backup plan?
A sahp can have other things going on and need child care. If a sahp is on the board and has meetings, they’d need child care. If a sahp has medical or other appointments, they’d need child care.
Should WOHPs have backup childcare?
- former SAHP/WAHP/WOHP who always has a backup
What is your backup?
I'm curious how the is "backup" is safer for the provider than opening child care. My backup is my parents who live 20 minutes away. It's much safer for us to drive to the school.
So you agree WOHPs should have backup.
Every WOHP has a backup. Usually it means missing work.
What is your backup that you claimed you have?
Yup, that’s often the plan. That’s parenting for ya.
Thanks for stating the obvious. So we can agree that MCPS prohibiting providers from opening (providers that were able and willing to open) means parents miss work and in many cases lose income. Many of these parents are MCPS staff with young children. What is the point of opening schools if you make it impossible for the staff to go to work?
