That's a misconception. Buses handle fairly well in the snow due to their weight. They're not the limiting factor. The limiting factor is probably teachers commuting from other areas. But, yes, also doesn't make sense to apply to forced child care closures.

Bus drivers have to get there a few hours before to clean off the snow and get the busses warmed up. And, many kids walk and don't have bus service. For HS, its 2 miles. Often with no sidewalks, crossing multiple busy roads, etc. You think its ok to a HS student to walk at 6:30 AM on black ice on the middle of the road because there are no sidewalks? Multiple kids have been killed this year due to car accidents.

No, but we will open them when it rains and will also open them less than 3 days after snow has ended.

We at least won't keep them closed after high schools open up. Delays should really mean they open up 30 minutes before high schools so teachers have some chance to get to get to school without being massively late.

Then, offer the minimum wage child care worker rides and get out to the school site with a shovel and clear it for everyone.

I'm curious how the is "backup" is safer for the provider than opening child care. My backup is my parents who live 20 minutes away. It's much safer for us to drive to the school.

Thanks for stating the obvious. So we can agree that MCPS prohibiting providers from opening (providers that were able and willing to open) means parents miss work and in many cases lose income. Many of these parents are MCPS staff with young children. What is the point of opening schools if you make it impossible for the staff to go to work?
