YES you are correct, on both points.

The Democrat in Texas’s 23rd doesn’t have a runoff, and 3,000 more Democrats than Republicans voted in this district.

Tony Gonzales has withdrawn from the race. The Republicans were successful in getting him to job his bid for reelection. No runoff

This is now the Republican candidate - this MAGA influencer calls the district “deep red” when it’s only R+7 and a lot of those Rs are Latinos who voted for Trump in 2024 but hate his guts now.

Who is the Dem opponent and what’s his/her background, if you know?

Oh good lord
A very accurate name.

MTG's seat is going to a runoff between Republican Clay Fuller and Democrat Shawn Harris. Unfortunately, the Republicans didn't split their votes enough to let Harris squeak out a win tonight. Fuller should win this one by about 20 points.

Why did the GOP suddenly turn on Gonzales? I thought sexual shenanigans were perfectly acceptable to them.

Republicans would’ve continued to support Gonzalez had he won his primary outright, but since it went to a runoff, they don’t want to spend the money and they also know that he’s vulnerable. This is nothing to do with the values. This is just a pure power move.

Yes please. Mom, teacher, lawyer seems like an excellent combination for a representative.

Interesting that the article doesn't mention the GOP candidate's videos making light of the Nazis liquidating Jewish ghettos and talking about his copy of Mein Kampf. He claims it's all a joke, of course.

So according to Republicans, an affair with a subordinate is disqualifying for representing the district in 2027 but they have no issue with him representing the district right now.

They don’t care that he had an affair. Their messiah was married three times and had continuous affairs throughout each marriage, including with underage girls and porn stars. It’s NBD, Trump normalized that for them. The problem is the affair partner lit a match to herself and died. That’s the issue. Maybe had Stormie Daniels or one of the multitude of Trump’s affair partners iced herself, or more accurately lit a fire as she was doused in accelerant, we wouldn’t have such a despicable and foul person as CIC.

My point was, whatever he did, the party finds it disqualifying for serving in 2027 but not for serving right now. If something is disqualifying then it should be disqualifying, period. But Mike Johnson can't afford to lose one vote even for the few months it would take for a special election to replace him.
