The food sucks but I do like the general store in the front of the restaurant. Get rid of the old white gut that I never even noticed but not the old times country store in the front.
Relative to the other offerings in places where you can find Cracker Barrel, the food is solid. It has grilled fish and meat options and veggie and fruit options. This might seem basic, but when the other options in town are a fried chicken joint, a Pizza Hut, and a gas station, it's a relief to find a Cracker Barrel. People who trash it are generally comparing it to restaurants in cities, and that isn't a fair comparison. Cracker Barrel needs to appeal to rural people with a hearty diet in addition to travelers who are looking for something more nutritious than Chick fil A. For what it is and the niche it fills, they do a good job.

+1 It has more character. Represents the beloved uncle of the founder and old timey Tennessee country stores which inspired the uniqueness of the Cracker Barrel restaurant chain. There was absolutely no need to change to a bland, boring orange sign that a first grader could have designed.
