EM got his head handed to him. Lol

Travel soccer parent. EM completely mismanaged this. He first angered a heck of a lot of us with his Edge $1000 team fees. Then he got greedy and nominated too many people. Then he expected us to vote for his slate. What a joke. No one trusts him. And I support getting rid of all the other sports.

So you support getting rid of other sports that 1000s of kids participate in?

We were just told the optional EDGE training would only be $220 for 11 sessions. Which is a great value over the other training options in this area, which run closer to $40 per session. And it is optional, except for the 1st teams U13-U19... which to be honest, is a great deal for year round prioritized team indoor training space.

Secondly, 'getting rid of the other sports' is a complete mischaracterization. That is not the same as dividing SYC into SYC Soccer and SYC All other sports, it would be easier to manage if that were the case. No one wants to remove options for kids playing sports, it's just becoming an organizational management problem.

My DS is 1st team so it’s “mandatory.” They angered a bunch of 1st team parents.

However, the commissioners do set the pay for the office staff. Anyone ever ask how much they make?

this would transparent as SYC is non-profit. just ask around and you should get an answer. if not, then there is much more issues. SYC do not want to get IRS involved.

For SYC (travel), the word "transparency" is like garlic to a vampire—or kryptonite to Superman. But mentioning "IRS" and that’s on a whole other level.

Not true for all clubs. Arlington does a great of ensuring rec and travel get good fields

It's a lot easier when you're in a county where the COUNTY does a good job of providing fields.

Unlike Fairfax, which seems to put youth everything last.

Don’t think you can draw any conclusions from who showed up. We got multiple messages from our travel coach about voting. I voted online from work (not the way they wanted me to, though).

Lots of us voted “not the way they wanted”

Interesting question. The board should have a conflict of interest policy each Director has signed governing this. Without much context I would say it would definitely be a conflict of interest.

The point is valid. Board Members should not be paid/ employed by the Club they are governing. It is a conflict of interest and yes, these discrepancies could lead to loss of tax exempt status by the county for a non-profit. So, if a paid Coach is elected to the Board, they can't be a paid Coach's anymore as that is a conflict of interest. Board Members drive policy regarding pay (among many things), it compromises integrity, there is a ripple effect and impacts other staff members and its bad look. (An example of an exception to this if it a new non-profit or the President of the Non Profit is also on the Board as someone who stood up the board.) Neither of those cases applies in this scenario. This is not a best practice.

Non compliance by a nonprofit would be subject oversight from the State Attorney General's Office and or the IRS. Elected Board members of a nonprofit should not take their duties lightly as their success helps to ensure/ protect the nonprofits legal status.

So, they may have to re-compete that position and hold another vote or open themselves up to become subject to further scrutiny.

Sounds like a focus issue. He has been more focused on SYC politics than coaching for quite some time now. Had he been focused on the correct things these past few weeks, his team may have gotten a better result this weekend.

Those kids deserve better.

It's actually not doing this at all.
