TJ is a Virginia Academic Year Governor's School, not just an FCPS thing.
Virginia hasn't opened a new academic year governor's school in a while. But there are several for the arts. Just not here.

All of Floris, McNair, and Fox Mill go to Carson. Most of Coates and Crossfield go there, along with a small part of Oak Hill (rest of Oak Hill goes to Franklin).
The people who are being really aggressive on the topic seem to be Crossfield folks insisting that they'll have dibs on the new school.

No way. First they need to purchase the property. Then they need to set aside funds in next years budget to plan for renovations. Then they have to fund the renovations and complete the build. I’d say 2028-29 school year with 2027-28 being an ambitious timeline.
The purchase is to be finalized in August. They can have kids in the building during whatever minor renovations are needed to turn it into a county school from a private school. Every other school in the county is still in use during much more extensive renovations.
You forgot that schools need staff and teachers.
And who will get sent there?
This ain’t just a snap your fingers exercise.
Wouldn't much of the staff transfer from existing schools?
I am sure that there would be some transferring of teachers, but they would need more then that. If they decided that the kids who attend Carson as their base MS, so Fox Mill, Floris, Coates, and McNair, I think those are the ES that feed into Carson but I might be missing one, then the schools those kids attend will see a drop in population but not enough to move most of the teachers. I think that in this situation kids would be moved from South Lakes, Westfield, and Oakton. Some of the teachers could be moved from those schools to make up the core teaching component for the new school but you would need all of the elective teachers and probably more teachers for core subjects. And you need a new Admin team.
I think basic remodeling in the school and building an Admin team could be done in a year. Some additional renovations, like the sports fields, might take longer. Those could be shared with Carson.

Easier said than done. And who would go there? It’s taken them a year and a half to get to shoddy tentative maps. How on earth would they get there with this new school in a quicker timeframe?
Earliest this HS is used is Fall of 2027, but I envision it gets bumped at least a year to avoid making large changes in an election year.
I could see fall 2026.

It's a fairly new property. How much in renovations could it need?
