He said it went ok, but no yes or no was given and I personally left confused. Did he miss the decision? Should I take this as a “Thanks for coming to try out, the answer is no, bye now?” Should I follow up with the coach? What is the usual process?

I would call that a safe club for the bottom (purple and white) teams. 13s and 14s top (black) teams were above the average in the region. A beginner will likely make the bottom teams, but they had beginners on their top teams as well. Like in any other clubs, coaching is better for the black teams compared to the bottom teams.

That was so eye opening. As good as you think your DD is, she will get a pretty good picture of how much better everyone is, how competitive the tryout process can be, and it will reset your DD’s expectations. It’s a reality check but also a really good workout.
Anonymous wrote:I posted that rather depressing overview of tryouts and it’s some positive news is every girl we knew who had some experience and wanted to play found a team last year somewhere.
Some of our lessons learned. My daughter, with years of experience, isn’t going to Paramount or Metro. There are too many there and tryouts are too hectic. She thought about it but prioritized other long shots last year and this hurt her. She then, also prioritized back up clubs she didn’t really want to play for because she thought they would be easy offers. She hadn’t gone to clinics. They weren’t.
This year she is only looking at a small handful of mid range clubs and going to the pre season clinics. We will see how that goes.

"U14 is very competitive in all clubs. Moco has a lot of returners who want to make it back to their teams or climb one level within the club. If your daughter is comparable to a returner in all aspects, the returner will likely get the spot. Some teams lose a few players to better clubs, so that's a chance for players from other clubs to make a team. But these outsiders will compete with club players who want to trickle up from the bottom teams. If players trickle up, a few spots become available in the bottom teams. Those few spots will likely be taken by players from weaker clubs who want an upgrade. It is very unlikely to make a Moco team with no club experience, especially at the U14 level. To increase your chances to make a Moco team, go to their fall tryouts - that's where you will see some (but not all) of your competition."
