Some people like car stuff a lot more than other people. But the person who sees no reason to buy something more expensive than a Toyota surely has other stuff they care about and want to spend money on.
The fun part about having extra money is pursuing/supporting the things you like and/or are passionate about. And being reasonably comfortable. So people will spend on comfort and what they like. I don’t think they care about being “low key” or not.

We spend very little on clothes and jewelry. My husbands watch is a $100 Swiss Army watch. We’ve always lived well below our means as we both grew up middle class. We do fly first class. By any definition we are UHNW and we are very happy with the way we live. We are currently doing a window replacement project in our home that is costing $35k and I don’t worry about paying for it. That’s a real luxury!
you don't have a nice home if your windows only cost $35K. just saying...

LOL. What a weird thing to say bud. Omega is a wealth indicator? I have one in my drawer somewhere. I guess I should wear it too.
I do not look at or care about people’s watches ever. How many people really do?

Kids are in public school, but I do like nice things - have a couple of Hermes bags (not the birkin/kelly/constance/picotin, I dont think most people recognize the bags). wear 22K gold jewelery, diamond studs, travel to Europe almost every year and one trip to caribbean. I stopped posting on social media 10 years ago, but dont lie where we are vacationing when people ask me. Own two cars, a new BMW X3 (mid price luxury) and a 12 year old BMW (probably worth 5K at this point). NW almost $7M. DH does wear his Omega and his JLC. Someone can also look at our linkedin and guess our HHI, we both are in tech. Most friends are in tech, so they know the salary ranges. I do think there is no glory in hiding wealth, if you really do enjoy luxuries. We buy things because we like them and want to wear/own/experience them not to do any "status signaling". I am not going to "deprive" myself, just because some/all people think that I am flaunting my money. We save plenty
Similar here. NW about 7M, HHI 1.2M, house worth about 1.3M. I'd be surprised if anyone on our block made more than us, but I'd also be surprised if they thought we make as much as we do. The ways that we "show" our wealth aren't especially conspicuous. If you visit our house, it's very tidy and put-together. And we take annual vacations abroad. But otherwise I don't think anything is terribly obvious. I grew up with absolutely nothing and have a reflexive distaste for showing off wealth.

Anonymous wrote: I’ve done some reflecting on this. DH and I grew up lower to middle class. We bought our house years ago and family, neighbors and friends are all middle - upper middle class. I will admit here that I have some prejudices about rich people, despite being one now myself.
I don’t trust that I could raise kids well who understand how wealthy they are. I do not want to get into circles where I or my kids feel pressure to keep up with the Joneses.
So, we don’t go out of our way to save money, but because our house is so cheap and cars aren’t that exciting, we do end up saving a lot. We go on nice vacations, and I buy lots of clothes but just at places I’ve always shopped.
For reasons above, plus possibility of getting robbed or being a target for a scam, I don’t want to buy watches or purses that cost thousands.
