It feels lawless and we feel less safe than we did when we moved to the neighborhood 10 years ago. I'm afraid to sit in my car waiting for my kids activities to end because of carjackings. DH has had enough and wants to move. I have had enough but just can't imagine where we would go where we wouldn't trade one problem for another. But really we're probably staying because we like our house and have a super low mortgage payment compared to currently available rates. Financially, moving to the suburbs would be a very bad decision.

One of the nice things about moving to the suburbs is that you no longer have to engage in the cognitive dissonance that living in DC requires. That somehow 6000 stolen cars per year or muggings in broad daylight is normal.

The Virginia based team we were supposed to play just canceled on us. Their coach said the parents felt unsafe about spend 5 hours in that location. Can’t say I blame them after what happened there. That’s probably a loss of $1000 for the shops at Union Market. It’s just one anecdotal example, but I’m sure it will happen more and more.

I know things have been a lot worse in the city in the past. But each year, we seem to be going further backwards. Neighborhood stores are closing because they can't operate with this level of crime. There are shootings and car jackings in our neighborhood, where that was unheard of before. I drive by cars everyday up on blocks because the wheels were stolen. And I have a constant feeling of "wtf" because Bowser and the Council seem to either not care or not have a realistic plan to fix it.
When is it time to call it quits?
Yesterday. Won’t be long until Escape From New York becomes reality TV in major cities across the US.

Why aren’t real estate prices dropping then?
I live on Capitol Hill and there’s no question crime has gotten worse here in a way that impacts quality of life. But it seems like the gentrification train just keeps rolling…

I’m sorry, but that seems nuts to me.
Agreed. That's just lunacy.
Really? Seems like a rational decision.

I’m aware, think crime in the city is worse than it’s been in a long time, and still think it’s a silly decision.
