It feels lawless and we feel less safe than we did when we moved to the neighborhood 10 years ago. I'm afraid to sit in my car waiting for my kids activities to end because of carjackings. DH has had enough and wants to move. I have had enough but just can't imagine where we would go where we wouldn't trade one problem for another. But really we're probably staying because we like our house and have a super low mortgage payment compared to currently available rates. Financially, moving to the suburbs would be a very bad decision.

As someone who has lived in many cities in the US and in the world, downtown and suburbia…. Move. This sounds awful. We had friends who lived in Cap Hill about a decade ago, and walking in the evening, there were signs of crime then, but nothing compared to what you are describing now. Our friends moved years ago, and they couldn’t be happier. There are many, many places to live. It doesn’t have to be like this.

Well said.

I don’t blame them either. I’m in a VA exurb and I can see being concerned about the logistics of a game at that location. What is the parking situation, how far would we have to walk to get to the field, where would we be walking through to get to the field. The city has a built in revenue stream from the people that live there, but there should be concern about the perception that many places in DC are not safe to walk around in, even in broad daylight, and the impact that has on drawing non-residents in to spend their money.

I know things have been a lot worse in the city in the past. But each year, we seem to be going further backwards. Neighborhood stores are closing because they can't operate with this level of crime. There are shootings and car jackings in our neighborhood, where that was unheard of before. I drive by cars everyday up on blocks because the wheels were stolen. And I have a constant feeling of "wtf" because Bowser and the Council seem to either not care or not have a realistic plan to fix it.

When is it time to call it quits?

Yesterday. Won’t be long until Escape From New York becomes reality TV in major cities across the US.

Stop with your lies! That’s an award winning documentary made during a democratic administration.

Why aren’t real estate prices dropping then?

I live on Capitol Hill and there’s no question crime has gotten worse here in a way that impacts quality of life. But it seems like the gentrification train just keeps rolling…

Golden handcuffs has caused extremely low inventory in the desirable neighborhoods like CH and upper NW. For now, giving up a 3% mortgage rate for a 7% mortgage rates is scarier than the thought of being a crime victim. That calculation may change once the summer crime wave begins though. The city may “feel” more crowded but it’s not. City revenue is definitely dropping which will require services being cut which will lead to more crime. It’s a vicious cycle that is already underway but there is a lag time before the nice neighborhoods actually feel it.

Yep and the city is constantly jam-packed. Has anyone tried driving around here? Getting a restaurant reservation? Going to a museum or event? It's bonkers and everything feels more crowded than 2019. We need to do something about crime but honesty I don't think our leadership gives a flying f while all this money is still rolling in.

Maybe it’s ok for you, but why risk your kids getting shot or robbed to play sports in such a location.

Maybe the city should focus on reducing the crime problem. Otherwise, no one will come into the city.

I’m sorry, but that seems nuts to me.

Agreed. That's just lunacy.

Really? Seems like a rational decision.

I’m aware, think crime in the city is worse than it’s been in a long time, and still think it’s a silly decision.

Well please turn off the lights when you eventually leave.

It’s a lock the parents saw that news story and made their decision off that. Statistically unlikely, but not “lunacy” to be concerned.
