After reading through this conversation, it seems like a great college town with a good mix of bright students. How would you compare it to Wisconsin, Florida and Maryland for general academics and student experience? DC is oos for all schools listed, so looking for more than the "whatever school is cheapest" post.
Of these choices, Florida is both the cheapest and the highest ranked.
What does the ranking mean?
UF is ranked #28 per latest USnews and #1 public university according to Wall Street Journal. I know rankings can be wonky but the dcurban crowd seems obsessed with these things.

My DD ruled out two of these schools after visiting. The visits really helped. I think she is going to choose UGA.

The order in which I'd like to attend these schools (holding aside location): Wisconsin, Georgia, Maryland, Florida. The order in which I'd like to live in these places: Madison, Athens, Gainesville, College Park. So I'd obviously go Wisconsin and then Georgia (with a pretty big gap separating those two from UMD and UF). But who cares? It's not my choice/life. If you don't like the cold, your order will be different. If you think DeSantis has been good for public education in Florida, your order will be different. If you want to be a Metro ride away from DC, your order will be different. These are personal decisions.Anonymous wrote:Any new opinions or input on UGA? It is hard to get into, It's a great school, it's the second best college town next to Boulder.
Go Dawgs
Great college town. Blows away College Park and Charlottesville in that category.
Love Athens. Love Boulder. Like Charlottesville a lot. Madison crushes them all, though. (I can see a skier preferring Boulder, of course, but town-for-town, it's no contest.)
You're reminding me that my nephew was rejected at top choice W and heading to UGA (and trying to convince himself that Athens will be ok, even though he loved Madison).
Omg pls update

In our area, UVA and UNC are considered dream schools and huge reaches for OOS kids. I would say UGA is a slightly more attainable school for the same group of kids who are good students looking for that work hard play hard culture.
This is what I am seeing too. My kid was WL at UVA but in at UGA, OOS for both. Got large scholarship at South Carolina but doesn’t want to go there. Has many friends who would love SC but were either deferred or didn’t receive a scholarship. I think all of these large schools have gotten more and more competitive to get into.

My friend's son just graduated and is making 85k in DC. Other one in grad school, and a third working in NYC in finance. Such a bizarre reply. Did you child go there and leave?
I'm a military spouse who lives in Georgia and regularly sees the type. My kid did not bother applying there, no.
