It's just tragic every time these types of cases come up (surrogacy fights, tribal adoption fights, etc.) that the child is the one who pays the biggest price. Seems to me these need to be on the speediest docket possible so that it is resolved before the child is 3 yrs old.
These christian warriors are the worst.
The Afghan family raised her for 18 months, and they live in the US now. I agree with you that the "Christian warriors" are the absolute worst, and I feel pretty strongly that the USG is complicit here because Mast would never have been able to get away with this had it not been for high-level contacts (and corruption!), but thought it needed to be said that this child isn't going back to Kabul when returned to her rightful family. She's staying right here and being raised by people who have known her since infancy.
Thanks for the clarification. To be precise, I meant THESE specific Christian Warriors are the worst. (Although I'm not a fan of some other christian warriors, as well.)
If the Afghan relatives have not been in contact with the child for months (not sure if they have any contact), then a 3-4 yr old isn't going to remember what happened when she was 0-18 mos. Good to know that she won't be traumatized by culture shock of being placed in Afghanistan in the near future.

A couple in Palmyra, Virginia (close to Charlottesville) is being sued by an Afghan refugee couple who now live in Texas for being tricked into coming into the US last summer by the husband, Marine Joshua Mast, in a plot to have their baby “adopted” by the Masts. Essentially, this baby was orphaned when it’s entire family died in a bombing but the baby survived. Mast was in Afghanistan at this time and this was how he met the baby and immediately was trying to get the US government to grant permission for him to bring it back to the US.
Humanitarian laws, Afghan laws and customs as well as US laws/customs basically require an Afghan child who is orphaned to be placed with a relative and if that is not possible then with another Afghan, Muslim family in Afghanistan and if that’s not possible, then and only then could it possibly be placed with a US couple but only if that US couple is Muslim AND of Afghan descent. The Masts are none of these.
The Masts are graduates of Liberty University and are evangelical Christians. There is an extensive paper trail of their repeatedly requesting to be allowed to bring the baby to the US and adopt it. DoD and State department said no. Baby was eventually placed with its first cousin who is a married adult and that couple raised it for a year. Joshua Mast stayed in touch with this couple.
In the US, in Fluvanna County, Virginia the Masts sued in local court to petition to adopt the baby and become its guardian which both were granted. When chaos in Afghanistan ensued last summer with the Taliban taking control Josh Mast convinced the couple to come to the US with the baby and helped them make arrangements. They flew into Dulles where Mast and a social worker met them when the couple was informed the baby no belonged to the Masts and Joshua took it. The Afghan couple has not seen the baby since.
It is unclear if the Masts are in Palymra or NC now but the lawsuit is finally coming out in the media. It is incredible. Human trafficking, kidnapping, etc. There are several articles online re this. Even Foxnews reported it in a less than flattering tone towards the Mast. Here is just the one from WaPo.

Why isn't this a bigger story?
Honestly I think it’s too complicated to explain on cable news.
Anonymous wrote:I hope everyone reading about this knows that it is the story of just one delusional couple who is using adoption as a means to steal a baby. I am a Christian (not of the holy roller type) who formed my family by adoption due to health reasons and because I believe that adoption can be a great, ethical option. There is definitely a stereotype of Christians adopting to “save” kids and form these large broods. Or going about adopting in sketchy ways out of a sense of entitlement. They are the exception not the norm.
