Money and perception and a decade of rejections from other top colleges. Tsk, Tsk.
It has solid programs, a reasonable price and happy students. It has rolling admissions and is not bothered that a lot of strong students use it as a safety. As is often discussed on this board, a true safety has to be a school that there is a strong likelihood that your student will get into and that your student will be happy to attend. The bonus with Pitt is that you can know you have a good acceptance early and it relieves a lot of panic that a strong student might not get in anywhere because the schools that are a "match" have acceptance rates below 20%. Add to that its honors college and DC Tag, which provides an incentive for DC kids to go to out of state schools, it is better priced than many and provides merit aid. It ticks a lot of boxes as they say

Make sure there is not a letter attached to your admissions email. We did not realize one was there when my DC was admitted until someone suggested we check, which we did several weeks later!

My DC is waiting as well. Submitted in late October.
I'm surprised you're still waiting my DD submitted on November 1st and heard back about 2 weeks ago. She's waiting to hear from JMU, hopefully in a few weeks.
Which school is better for Engineering - Pitt or JMU?

Your DS already has 1st semester grades? My DD has 1st quarter grades but her notice from Pitt specifically requested 1sr semester grades which she will not have until late January.
